Default Need help

Hello everyone.

I have a 2005 Cruiser with under 17,000 miles.

I have a Malfunction Indicator Light on. I ran the "trick" with the ignition switch, as per a post here, and got a code #.

I have looked through several posts, but need a list of the code #s, and what they indicate.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Okay, I just went out, and triple checked.

I am getting the code P 0456.

Any idea what that means?

P0456 is a small evap leak, or small vacuum leak. Some people on here might suggest to make sure your gas cap is loose, but there's a code specifically for a loose gas cap, which you don't have.

Check all your rubber vacuum lines in the engine. Having such low mileage on a 5 year old car, it comes as no surprise that a few vacuum lines might be a little dried out and brittle, allowing unmetered air into the engine.

Cool Re: Need help

I finally went out today to work on the Cruiser. It was cool compared to how hot it has been in this area.

I have trouble with the heat because I have MS. I hate having it, but after 12 years, I still walk and still drive, so I can't complain.

I am an aircooled VW guy. I have a '73 Karmann Ghia which is my playtoy. Turboed, fuel injected, and I built it from the ground up.

But the PT Cruiser is all new to me, and I was lost, until I found this forum.

I have it running well now, no engine light, and I want to thank everyone who passed on all the good information.

You guys have a great weekend!!!

So what did you find?

I hear you with the heat and MS one of my best friends has it and the heat hurts him bad.

Cool Re: Need help

Hi Dino. I did several things.

I had a locking gas cap which had seen it's better days, so I put the original cap back on, which had hardly been used.

Then I put a new air filter on, and cleaned the small foam piece that was under the air filter.

While I was doing all this, I had the - battery cable undone.

I put it all back together, started it up, and the engine light was off. I also checked all the hoses and electrical connections, and everything looked to be in good shape.

It's good to have my car back the way it's supposed to be!
