I think my title says it all.. the compass display i noticed doesn't register as east when i am driving east it says w all of the time.... or nw.. or sw...those are all right just never reads e/se/ne... weird, is there a sensor for this? i tried a forum search with "compass" but got a bunch of erroneous results

Matt,

I take it you don't have an owners manual. On the top of the Tech & Performance section there's a sticky showing you how to download one for your particular vehicle. In it there's a couple pages of instructions on manual Compass Calibration. Not sure if that will help as you might have a defective unit, but it can't hurt.

I read that for setting the correct zone. I will look back to see about the manual calibration. Hopefully there is something pertinent. Will post back in a few

It's weird driving towards the sun in the A.M.. and seeing it say West.
I found this information in the handbook.
Manual Compass Calibration
If the compass appears erratic, inaccurate, abnormal or
the vehicle is new, you may calibrate the compass. Prior
to calibrating the compass make sure the proper zone is
selected. Refer to “Magnetic Zone Selection”.Find an
open area away from large metal objects. With the vehicle
running, press and hold the STEP button for (about 10 to
15 seconds). The display will illuminate the CAL indicator.
Drive slowly (about 5 mph) in 3 complete 360 circles.
The CAL indicator will turn off and the compass will be
calibrated.

I will try and post later. There is a round about near the house I can take advantage of. Hopefully, this will work.

BTW. your host mediafire, for the pt handbook, activated my AV and said there was malicious attempt. It was blocked. I use Google's online storage. Google docs, you get it free when you sign up for gmail. It's like having your own fileshare right in with your email. You set access to specific documents in your upload area or you can set open access to everyone. Very neat.

Thanks crewzin, you have always been so helpful .

We're having major solar flares maybe they're screwing with the compass

I never really noticed it wasn't working until a few days ago.. I saw letters up there but don't really use the compass. I use the temp display, as I always like to know how d@mn hot it is outside here in FL. So when that wasn't working when I bought it month and a half ago, that was one of the first things I noticed. I bought and replaced the temp sensor before even getting the oil changed to synth lol .

Calibrate Compass as step #1.
Mine was "off" a little....when brand new.
Welcome.

Ok so I did this three times and had the same results everytime.
I went to the roundabout, stopped in the middle, held the button for a while until CAL lit up.
Then drove around the roundabout for about 10 minutes ..
After a few times around it registered and E was, oh my, reading as E and no longer reading as W!
But then I kept driving around the roundabout expecting the CAL light to turn off..
minutes later...never does.. and so I start to hit buttons to see if it would turn off.. nothing... then as a last resort I shut the car off and finally the CAL light was off when car was turned back on.. but my display read W not E again..

On the second one " a little bigger roundabout" I tried it again and got same results.. "but then tried to exit the circle without a key off/on and instantly it was all messed up N said W blah blah".. but drove to next one.. key off then to reset since it didn't work..

Last round about was a pretty good sized one. Drove around it for like 15 minutes, Nothing better.. fiance was like oh my god matt wtf i'm like seriously getting dizzy. Do you really need this thing? You act like you dont know which way is north.

Ya, so I gave up.. I don't know but i must have gone around each like 50 times.
You can imagine the looks and honks we heard as we were constantly driving around... slow as a turtle ...in the circle....
I can laugh now. I will have to try the next time myself..

Only thing I can think of that I didn't try was we were driving counter-clockwise in every round=about.. Don't know if it matters.
Wasn't needing a ticket so I'll have to find some other open area as to try it going clockwise...I did try speeding up in the end and going a little faster than 5 but still nothing

Any inputs...?? I just wanted that d@mn CAL to turn off when it is working... Maybe i missed something but i thought it was supposed to turn off by itself.. mashing buttons didn't do much.. lol
On the bright side, in CAL mode after a few times in the circle I can see East again!

Clockwise/counter-clockwise have anything to do with it you think?

Maybe this will work from service manual.. will try later... differs slightly

(1) Start the engine. If the compass/temperature
data is not currently being displayed, momentarily
depress and release the Step push button (this unlabeled
button is located directly behind the overhead
console display screen) to step through the display
options until you have reached the compass/temperature
display.
(2) Depress the Step push button, until “ZONE”
appears in the display (approx. 5-10 seconds), then
“CAL” will be displayed. Release the Step button
when CAL is displayed. The “CAL” in the display
indicates that the compass is in the calibration mode.
(3) Drive the vehicle on a level surface, at least
fifty feet away from large metal objects and power
lines, in all four compass directions, such as driving
around a city block several times or driving in two to
three complete circles at a slow speed (approx. 5
mph) until the CAL is no longer displayed.
(4) Finally, set the proper zone/variance for the
area you are in, when in manual override mode for
calibration, it defaults to zone 8.
NOTE: If the “CAL” message remains in the display,
either there is excessive magnetism near the compass,
or the unit is faulty. Repeat the calibration
procedure at least one more time.
NOTE: If the wrong direction is still indicated in the
compass display, the area selected for calibration
may be too close to a strong magnetic field. Repeat
the calibration procedure in another location.

I will do this in the parking lot at church later. There was a note to stay clear of power lines, large metal structures, etc.. i'm hoping that is why my unit displayed cal consitently as power lines and junction boxes were at each roundabout.

Hope this works, will post back later.. btw, would i have to replace the whole unit if faulty? or just a compass sensor. and are these cheap..
Thanks guys..

Is not working. CAL remains illuminated;however; after a few times around a circle it displays E correctly. Just can't get it to save it.
