Default K&N air filter bad for engine?

My 03 Limited is currently running on K&N oil and air filters.

I bought the air filter from Amazon.com for 36.16, free shipping. One of my friends told me the K&N filter allows greater air flow rate simply because it filters less, and it could be actually bad for the engine.

The old filter is a FRAM, I looked at it against light and can't see through; but I can clearly see through the K&N filter.

I am a bit concerned, is it really bad for engine?

I wouldn't worry about it all that much, the amount of expensive engines running around with high quality aftermarket filters is huge and if their was a problem it would be known. It's true though it does let in more airflow with in-turn could have a minuscule amount of dirt in it. I've had mine a Airaid CAI for a while and no issues except a better running PT.

I have used K&N air filters for years and never had any problems. There is also spray on oil for K&N air filters and that actually helps to catch more fine particles than a paper-based air filter. The reason they flow better is because of a finer mesh than other air filters. Believe me, a K&N does provide better throttle response over a regular air filter - especially with turbos.

I have one on every vehicle, to include my airplane ($30,000 engine) - with no problems.

It's not just the filter that filters the air, it's the oil in the filter too. Bought the air filter and the maintainance kit at the same time.

Your friend should stop talking about cars. What he said is not true at all.

The reason they flow better is because they're made out of a gauze material instead of paper, which simply allows for better air flow.

Fact: Air is a necessity for internal combustion to happen (filtered air is preferable)
Fact: K&N has been around for years and has a fine reputation.
Fact: I ran a K&N on our first PT for over 70,000 miles with no issues at all.
Fact: If filtration restricts air flow too much, engine performance will suffer.
Suspected fact: Your friend is misinformed
