Default Auto Transmission...junk?

I recently bought an 08 PT cruiser touring edition with 24K miles. Looks & runs just like new. I keep hearing what a piece of junk the Auto Transmission is. Is this true or is it about average ? Comments please...
Thanks,
Roger

There does seem to be a lot of deaths of Autos...

Best thing to do - every 50,000 miles - find a place with a flushing machine and have all the fluid flushed out and refilled. Be sure they only use ATF + 4.

Roger,

Who told you that, a Fix Or Repair Daily guy probably.

There's loads of us with over 100,000 miles without a problem at all with the transaxle. Now, it your going to challenge the ricers from stop light to stop light, it won't last long ....it's CRUISER. Drive normal, change the fluid with ATF+4 when needed and it will last.

Thanks for the replys..I have read on several forums how the PT's transaxel has given readers lots of problems, plus my neighbor had to replace his. I guess when you buy a new (new to me) car, you automatically start looking for potential problems.

It's mostly the turbo PT's with the auto, if you boost in 4th gear the trans goes bye bye

I can't think of a single transmission we've had to replace at our dealership. Maybe 1 or 2 in the entire 10 year run of the PT. The bottom line is, if you take care of the tranny it can outlast the car. The vast majority of transmission failures can be directly or indirectly related to never flushing/replacing the fluid.

I wouldn't worry about yours for a while, though, because you still have warranty if it's an '08 with only 24k miles.

My advice would be to do pan drop and filter change every 30 K.

You could also add a magnefine external filter on one of the cooler lines. I would put a B&M bulkhead fitting/drain on the pan when you do the first change and then that would allow you to drain it in the future without the mess when you drop the pan or just change the external filter and drain and refill.

Dont bring it to bubbas or schlepp boys because they wont give a rats as$ and will probably use the wrong fluid. I would do it myself and after changing the filter and pan and refill do a cooler line flush.
