Question Lifting rear of PT Cruiser

Hi, I just got my 2005 PT cruiser and love it! Unfortunately the rear drum brakes are worn, and I have to replace them. I want to get the rear up on jack stands, but the jack points don't really look big enough to use both a floor jack and a jack stand.

How safe is it to lift off the rear axle? The owners manual says not to do it, is it really that likely to bend the axle?

Any info or suggestions would be great!

I have lifted the car with a floor jack just in front of the points, placed the jack stands under the PT and then removed the floor jack.

I took a length of 2x6 and put it between floor jack and axle to dstribute stress when I changed my rear springs....
