Default code P1684

New to sight and need help finding out what this code is and the remedy. I know that P1684 is "drive 5 line 4" but that means nothing to me. Would someone interpret that for me. The car will not shift out of 1st gear and the check engine light is on, no other codes. Changed tranny fluid (ATF +4) and filter.

Welcome to the Forum. Did this problem start AFTER you changed tranny fluid and filter, OR is this the reason you changed the fluid & filter?

The tranny was not shifting before, just found out about how to receive codes and this is what I got. Brand new to PT's also, so I'm just learning. Car is 2001.

You wont' like this, but apparently there are two different read-outs for the P1684 fault code and one is:

P1684 does not indicate a problem; it's only a status, which indicates that the PCM memory has been cleared within the last 50 ignition cycles. "Done" indicates that no DTC's are present and the procedure is complete.

I can't find anything on the "driver 5 line 4" code.

Think your in Limp Mode and you need to find someone with a scanner to try and pinpoint the problem.

Crewzin is right, P1684 is not a DTC and there is no such code in the TCM. This means that the two issues you're having are unrelated.

If the tranny is going into limp mode, you'll need to have a scanner hooked up that can read codes off the TCM to find out what's going on.

Put external reader on and get the same code and no others. I appreciate your help. I don't know what else to do. If I unhook the battery and make sure it is charged do you think the TCM will reset? The battery is completely discharged.

You will receive the p1684 code anytime you disconnect the battery.

I remember seeing the driver 5 line 4 thing somewhere too when googled the error messages that the car gave me... and I remember that before my car died this morning it wouldn't work in 1st gear.... like at all. It wasn't firing at all in first gear and always had this strange smell when the rpms got up high.. but it was doing this before it over-heated too. My car is an automatic.. and I love her dearly. Can someone please tell me what this might mean??

bananabond,

How come you didn't mention the "stuck in first gear" in the other thread you started?

Doesn't matter, just like gyrene who started this thread, you have to take in to someone with a scanner to diagnose the tranny problem after or while your putting your car back together driving while overheated.

You're not going to be able to read codes off the TCM with an aftermarket code reader. You'll need Chrysler specific diagnostic equipment that can communicate with the TCM.
