Usually it's a clicking noise and it's the clock spring inside the steering column. Never hear of a wiping noise.

Does anyone have an answer to this?
I've got the same noise on my 2001 LE. Squeaking/wiping noise. Pitch varies with the speed at which the wheel is turned (lower pitch when the wheel is turned slowly). I can also feel a minute amount of vibration through the steering wheel, so it seems evident that there is some contact/friction in the steering wheel that maybe needs lubrication. The wheel turns smoothly. It doesn't bind up and I don't feel any drag. So, is there anything wrong here, or can I just ignore it? If it is the clockspring, what will happen if it eventually fails? |
