Default 01 PT Cruiser Dash Air Vent Problem

I've spent hours trying to find an answer to this question. A case of beer to anyone that can help me out.

Year: 2001
Model: Limited Edition

Simple problem: The air vents always blow air - as if the air flow was set to the lowest setting.

Details: Floor, deforst or vent, all do the same thing. Idle at a stop, or driving 60mph, same thing. The controls all work normally. I can turn up the air flow, and down, and it will work as it should. If I turn the air off, the air continues to flow (as if it's still on at the lowest setting). The air temp works as it should (a/c, heat, etc.) - so no problem there. It simply doesn't turn off all the way.

The only hint I got, is if I gas the car, the air will flow less or not at all - for a period of 1-6 seconds as I'm stepping on the pedal.

It's not a huge problem, but it's annoying when I'm fine having the air off, and not wanting to adjust the temp controls because it's always on.

For some reason I think vacuum issue, perhaps check valve? Maybe under the dash? I'm not sure. If no one can point me in what could be the right direction, my next step is to buy a shop manual and start to unscrew, unbolt and play with things..Meh...

Thanks.

I thought that as the PT is a positive air system you always have a flow of air thru the car. You have vents in the rear door frame to exhaust the air.

News to me.. That doesn't sound right though - I mean, I've owned 22 cars/trucks (older and newer) and I've never heard of such a thing? Does anyone else have this "problem"? I guess if everyone else with a PT does, then it is normal.. But I suspect that is not true?

My 2001 does the same thing. I'm sure it's the flow through ventilation system. Did you try setting the knob on recycled air instead of outside air? If that doesn't slow it down a little (don't think you can shut it off completely) adjust the temperature to a neutral setting and have the air system point towards the windshield or down to the floor so you can't feel it hitting your body.

Strange. I must admit I'm surprised that this could be normal operation. If more would like to chime in and confirm this, it would be appreciated.

I have not yet tried to recycle air, I'll try that and follow-up a bit later. Do you know if you turn off the vents (close them with the turn knob), if the air will stop (I suspect it would, as it would be blocked) or would it reroute elsewhere (floor for example)?
