Default Rat Rod PT Cruiser build thread

So I wanted to start a thread that follows the build of my PT Cruiser Rat Rod project. Unlike other Rat Rod projects that I've seen, I'm going for an old rusty version - as though it just came out of a field. In fact, if it all works out, I'm hoping to get some pics of it in a field and make a whole story/write-up about the "rare find"...

So here's the car I'm starting with. It's an '02 base model - my 2nd PT Cruiser, and sits resplendent in it's plum paint (my least favorite color) with the typical headlight fade and Chrysler bumper tape marks...

My vision for the perfect paint job would look much like this:

Here's a before and after (yes - the rust is "after") of a VW that was done...

Before:

After:

In addition to the paint, I want to mod the car to the 50's style a bit. So step one is the taillights:

Gotta have 50's wheels - wheels always define the look of the whole car...

I picked up these wheel covers from Speedway and put them on an old set of chrome smoothies I have. These whitewalls where a failed experiment I tried with paint, but do give an idea of the look. The real whitewalls will be added later...

Already, the car is starting to look old school... (there's my first PT in the background - in need of a bath...)

It's a factory defect - where the bumpers were taped off at the factory. Some chemical that was in the tape bleaches the bumpers... Only real fix is to paint the bumpers the car color, or gray if you prefer...

My next step is a rollpan for the back. It's ordered and should be here on Monday... Meanwhile, I'm experimenting with paint a little. I think the car will be a light green color - similar to this - only with more rust bleeding through...

Will do... I'm excited about this project. Even though I don't have much money to put into it, I think some creativity will go a long way. I was going to paint the car to look rusty, but may actually strip areas to bare metal and let them rust. Flat metal will stay rusty a long time before actually rusting through... I did some sanding on the rear hatch, so I'm over the initial shock of destroying the factory paint...
