Default K&M airfilter why so expensive?

Hi,

I looked around and found a RAM air intake for my PT Cruiser 2003 non turbo model, and found 2 substantially different products as far as price is concerned.

on the one hand there's a general $30 air intake (URL here)

On the other hand there's the similarly identical K&M intake of nearly 10x that price (URL here)

Why would they differ so much in price?

I mean, would the additional $200 cost be worth the perhaps 2 or 3hp extra?
I'd say it would only have a good $10 worth of materials...

You are paying for a name only. All of these intakes do basically the same thing. You do get a better quality filter with the K&N but it's still not worth that much more.Your best bet would be to buy the cheap one and then get a better filter for it.Just my opinion.

I would stick with the stock intake. I have scene so many of these cold air intakes on the dyno add next next to nothing. ON one we dynoed back to back vs stock intake and paper filter on a cummins deisel it actually lost power. Guy was pissed because it cost him like 2 bills for it.

I think most of them look nice and add nosie and that is about it.

I like the Amsoil drop in air filters but unfortunalty they dont make one for the PT.

agreed on most points but be careful on the cheap filters. The metal disc at the end can be sucked into the turbo. There were a couple of post showing what happened on ptcrew and it wasnt pretty the damage it did.

Open up the stock intake to 3" and add a K&N filter and you can't go wrong. It will improve your mileage slightly and be easy on the wallet because you will never have to buy another air filter.

I've got the FIPK K&N intake. Cost a good +200 but if you've got the money, why not? Looks good, sounds awesome, and I noticed an improvement over my modified stock airbox with K&N drop in filter. But before I went with the FIPK, I went with the drop-in filter and it worked well. I'd suggest going that route if you wish to save as much money as you can.

Here are the 2, the drop in filter just sits in the box with less than 350 miles on it. Anyone interested?

what kind of oil would you suggest for the filter, that's both cheap and good working?

And how frequent do you need to clean an airfilter?

The oil comes in a kit with cleaner, etc. from K&N. It should typically be cleaned every 100,000 miles when driven under normal driving conditions. Sooner when driven under dirty, dusty conditions on a regular basis. In other words, you won't need to get the kit for quite some time, if ever.

All of this info is available on the K&N site. K&N Products by Vehicle Search - Year, Make, Model, Engine Search Enter part # 57-1515-1 if needed

Cool Re: K&M airfilter why so expensive?

Lots of dust here in Oklahoma.
So, I clean my AirRaid every oil change.
Worst than that; soonercruiser just came back from the body shop.
Thick dust everywhere...including the air filter.

I bought this "hot" air intake (aka short ram) off ebay and am very satisfied!

CHRYSLER PT CRUISER NON TURBO 2.4L AIR INTAKE 01 02 03 - eBay (item 220673930751 end time Oct-24-10 12:05:54 PDT)

Very nice fit and sound. Probably no power increase but I needed some noise from under the hood
