Question Engine Oil dipstick handle broke off in tube

I have a 2006 non-turbo, and during some work under the hood I snapped off the yellow plastic handle of the engine oil dipstick. It broke of about an inch into the tube. Does anyone know of the dipstick length so I can replace it or of anywhere where I can get a replacement?
Also, to get the broken dipstick out of the tube, can I simply unscrew the attachment near the top of the tube and pull the tube out of the oilpan?
Is it just held into the oilpan by a rubber grommet?

Thank you for any help

Oil dipstick will be a dealer or local salvage yard item. Also e-bay or Craigs list but they would be slow compared to say, the dealer.

Also, be very careful. If you can't get the remainder of the the "stick" itself out of the tube, then the entire tube assembly (tube and stick) will have to be replaced. The tube itself is a "press-fit" on its bottom into the engine. Being to zealous when pulling/rocking it to remove it could result in its breaking off and leaveing its bottom portion that is in the engine ----- still in the engine and that is not a good thing.

Also keep in mind that there are differant tube/stick assemblies. Get the one for your particular engine Make sure you tell them if its for an N/A, early turbo
with metal intake or turbo with plastic intake. Yes I know you can modify the attachment point with angle brackets (been there done that)and such but why would you do that when you're buying a new tube anyway. Get the correct one to begin with.

Haha that was going to be my next question, can I remove the tube safely.
I saw a couple of threads about breaking off the tube in the pan, doesnt sound like a fun fix.
Assuming I remove the tube without breaking it, can I just push it back into the pan without much of a problem?

Theoretically yes. Examine the end to make sure you don't have any obvious stress cracks from the removal process and then shoot on some WD-40 to make the reinsertion easier. Make sure it is clocked propperly as you insert it, cause I don't think you're going to be able to "spin" it to align it after it's fully inserted.

Just another quick thought, its possable you could put a tiny drop of "gel" type super glue on the broken end of the handle top and then reinsert it making contact with the remainder of the stick still in the tube. Just make sure you don't use much more that a small drop or it could ooze out and glue the broken piece into the tube. Then all you would have to buy is the "stick" that we were origionally talking about and not the tube.

Of course if you can get the tube out intact, you can probably insert something long and thin into the bottom of the tube and push the broken piece of the tube out that way.

Cool Re: Engine Oil dipstick handle broke off in tube

Go to a flea market and get a long-nose, fine tip hemostat.
Probably only about $5.

The dip stick extens past the end of the tube, not the other way around. Remember, the dipstick end actually rests in the oil. Simply remove the tube and grab the end of the broken dipstick and pull it out of the tube.

Ok after staring at the tube for awhile, I decided to try a long, skinny drywall/wood screw. I screwed it into the middle of the broken plastic piece left in the tube and grabbed the head of the screw with a pair of plyers, and pulled it right out! Now I just have to hit the junkyard.
