Default cooling system issue

2001 pt cruiser just had the head gasket replaced along with the usual timing belt, water pump, thermostat. head was machined to the tune of $300 so i would guess they did more than just machining. this was all due to an loss of coolant and overheat situation. after the vehicle was returned it had an episode where the water level light came on and the temp went up close to red. cooled off added a little water and it was fine to get home. there was a puddle under the car. towed back to shop, they said everything was good except the radiator had a small leak under pressure. recomended i replace radiator. did that, all seems fine after test drive except The upper radiator hose is not hot to touch, and holds pressure like the thermo isnt opening. temp is normal, hot air through the heater vents. is this a bleeding issue, defective thermostat, any ideas?

I'd start with bleeding - bleeding screw is right by thermostat - next would be a new thermostat, then possibly hoses - are the hoses soft and squishy? sometimes they can collapse and block flow.

the bleeding appears to have done the trick. upper radiator hose is acting more normal now, no pressure as before. but heres the new thing. i work about 5 mi. from home so i took the car as a test run today. everything was going good until i got about 1/2mi from work and the temp gauge began a steady rise up to 3/4 scale. as soon as i decided to pull over and shut it down, the gauge just started slowly dropping to below 1/2 and stayed there the rest of the way. no puddles under the car, tonight it did fine never got above 1/2 scale. i have been running the heater full out both times. stopping in traffic didnt seem to cause the rise either. am i back to the bleeding board, or looking for something different
