Default I recently acquired a '06 PT Cruiser.

I have had little time to more than just basic checks to see that fluid levels are up and belts and hoses are in reasonable condition.
While moving it yesterday I found that the thing steers like a tank.
The first time I drove it, only a short distance, I didn't notice any problem with it.
My Daughter is the main driver of this vehicle and I asked her about it. She told me that for the first few minutes when the car is cold it steers just fine but as it warms up the power assist stops working.
I'll have to do whatever repair is required myself as I can't pay a mechanics fee on my disability income.
Any one have a suggestion as to what this problem might be?

I tried doing a search but can't find the exact problem you seem to be having but almost all the answers say to check the power steering fluid level. Chrysler only recommends ATF+4 fluid if you have to add any.

Well, I just sent my daughter off in my Dodge truck to see if she can find a Haynes manual.
That's normally the first thing I buy for all of my vehicles. The primary tool.
Thanks for looking but I had already done a web search for thre problem and really only found one sort of the same. The answer had something to do with a screen or filter in the P/S pump reservoir. Another simler problem was attributed to the steering rack.

Sorry, you won't find the Haynes or Chilton manual anywhere. Both of them only cover the 2001-2003 models but after saying that, not too much has changed in the steering since then (I think). 2006 was the biggest change Chrysler ever made to the Cruiser both interior and exterior. The electrics changed also putting all the fuses and relays into one location vs the two fuse boxes before that. Can't say about any other changes they might have made in the power-train or steering.

Looks like Haynes does publish a manual for it.
That doesn't mean it can be found locally.
But this is L.A. with a little effort you can find almost anything.

Great find. Can you read me the number of the book just above the Haynes symbol please.

That must be brand new because I even called their number a year or so ago asking for an updated manual and whoever I talked to knew nothing about it.

I found a Chilton manual for the 2001-2009 PT Cruiser on Amazon.
Amazon.com: Chrysler PT Cruiser: 2001 thru 2009 (Chilton's Total Car Care Repair Manuals) (9781563927997): Robert Maddox: Books

Thanks. I have the 01-03 Haynes and Chilton and they almost identical so I just ordered the 01-09 Chilton.
