Default Hood padding.

So i've been wondering, what's with that foam stuff on the underside of the hood? What's it's purpose and do i need it?

Haven't ran mine for a long time. We already have issues with heat build-up under the hood-- why would you want to TRY to seal it off?

Talking Re: Hood padding.

Hey Guys,

Ditto, I haven't run mine in a long time either. More paint to keep nice and shiny!

so if i take off the padding then there's gonna be heat build up? And if so i'm guessing it will mess up the paint job? But what if i get a custom hood like this one,

this is an EVO style hood for a Neon. But i'm thinking about having the guy make one for my PT, but with one of these hood's, i wouldn't have to worry about the heat build up right?

Quite the contrary. I'm saying that leaving the padding in place serves to trap heat underneath the hood. By removing it, the hot air in the engine compartment has nothing to "soak" in to under the hood, so it simply vents through the cowl. You could go a step further and remove the weatherstripping along the cowl. This allows the primary heat source under the hood (exhaust manifold) to vent heat, as opposed to trapping it inside of the engine bay.

A hood with vents is unnecessary, but it could be done.

Smile Re: Hood padding.

Hey their gkid1983,

Nope, shouldn't be enough to worry about at all. I have driven my PT 80+ 4 hours from LA to Laughlin NV for the big PT River Run without my hood liner in hot 100+ degree desert weather and never had an issue to and from as well as here there, and everywhere and never had any issues yet.

Also have had many close friends I have done paint work for, as well as custom mural work up under the hood that also never had any issues as well, so you should be good to go as far as I know.

Mythbuster's to the rescue:

Mythbuster: Under hood heat shield or fire blanket? - DSM Forums

Now's a good time to bring this up. Keep you engine grease free and always check your fittings to make sure everything is tight. The PT's fuel line in right there in plain site running across the top of the engine. There was a recall about that fuel line rubbing against the A/C lines and causing fires.
