Default Front end noise fixed (thanks to the forum)

I recently started having problems with my front end going from creaking to a cluncking noise. It seems the creek stayed and a loud clunking was added when going over large bumps. Then the car started to make horrible rattling noises as I drove over a bunch of little bumps. So I have a creek, clunk and rattle and they all came in that order. I came to this forum and searched the problem. I discovered that each noise seemed to be a different problem. I then got my car up on jacks and inspected the sway bar and the end links needed to be replaced and one sway bar frame bushing was bad. I then inspected the Lower control arm bushings and both the driver side and passenger side were bad. The lower control arm on the driver side was actually on the frame and the passenger side was almost touching the frame and looked really stretched. I then inspected the ball joints and the driver side was bad and seemed to have excess play more than the passenger side. The passenger side still looked ok but I come from the school of doing both sides. Everything else looked good. I decided to replace the upper (vertical) bushing and lower bushing and the ball joints on both sides. With this much replacing and pressing I decided to buy a set of control arms with the ball joint and bushings installed. I found a great deal on Moog control arms and Moog sway bar end links and sway bar body bushings. I attacked it this weekend and test drove it 40 miles and sounds great! The bonus was the car actually drove straighter! I let my wife test drive it the other half of 20 miles and said the car felt tighter and better going into corners and it drove much straighter, she let go the steering wheel and the car went perfectly straight down the road. She said that the car has never done that sense we bought it even with new tires and a front end alignment.

Lessons;

1. I discovered that a lot of people have front end noise and only attack one problem. Usually it's a combination of problems.

2. If you’re attacking the lower control bushing do both the ball joints and upper (vertical) bushings and inspect everything else. If you are unable to press in the new parts and want to save time, buy a quality set of control arms loaded and in some cases money.

3. Buy quality parts I bought Moogs and had everything delivered to my door.

4. If at all possible spray all bolts with PB over night and let sit and do the same in the morning.

5. The only problem I had been a sway bar bushing bolt broke off in the frame and I had to drill it out and retap the hole for a new screw. Be prepared for anything.

6. Take your time (doing both sides takes a lot of time).

7. I am never doing this again.

THANK'S TO THIS FORUM I WAS ABLE TO FIND ALOT OF VALUABLE INFORMATION!
