Post PT Purchase Opportunity - Need Advice

I am new to PT Cruisers and really do not know much about them. I need some advice please. I have an opportunity to purchase a 2004 PT Cruiser Touring Edition with a turbo engine. The car has 94K miles and cosmetically in excellent condition. However, the owner overheated the car and it blew a head gasket. My mechanic says it is common for these cars to overheat. He says I have basicaly two choices if I purchase the car; 1) fix the head gasket and valve job, or 2) replace the engine.

My questions are: 1) Is the car worth fixing?; 2) What is a reasonable price for the car?; 3) How much would it cost to fix? 4) Is there anything else I should look out for or fix at the same time?

Timing belt and water pump if you decide to fix it.

How much are they asking?

Btw, unless you often drive on the highway at 80mph don't expect good gas mileage. It is a fun car though!

Personally, I'd keep looking around. There's plenty of PT's on the used car market. No sense in starting off with problems, unless hey happen to be giving the PT away for practically nothing, then you won't loose anything by spending a bunch to fix it up.

If he overheated the car he could have warped the head which made the head gasket leak. Unless the guy is selling the car dirt cheap and you don't mind rebuilding some of the motor and doing the timing belt and water pump which is just about due, also changing the fan which is why most likely it overheated,my advice would be to walk away. With that said if the guy sells it cheap enough you would have a great project car.

As mentioned above,it is about time for the timing belt and water pump. That will be around $1000.I agree with CREWZIN though, you should keep looking and find yourself a good driver.

Thank you all for the advice. It was very helpful. I was thinking about it being a project car. What would be a reasonable price?? The guy is asking $2,500.00 as-is. Is this good or do I run in the other direction?

as others have said, add up what it's gonna cost for repair on top of the $2500. personally, if i'm gonna shell out $2500, i'd better be able to drive it home. but that's just me.
best of luck in your decision.

If you want a project and the rest of the car is mint than offer him 2k but be prepared to invest another 2k. In fact offer him 1500 and leave you number because I doubt he has much other interest. If he takes it than buy all the parts yourself and bring it to a trusted mechanic. Your going to need a new head a timing belt and water pump kit, I would seriously think about rebuilding or replacing the turbo. Also the fan needs to be checked that it's working on multiply speeds. Good luck, it could be a fun project as long as your not pressed into needing a running car right away.
