Default check engine light

sometimes it's on at start up, sometimes it's off.
sometimes it goes off while driving or on while driving.
a mechanic told me it's not showing any 4 digit code and that maybe the computer itself needs replacing.($600.00)
anyone heard of this before?

You can take it to Advance Auto or Auto Zone and they will scan it for free.I wouldnt go replacing the computer because it "may be" bad.

You can also try taking off the negative battery cable for about 10 minutes. That might help be re-setting the computer. Can't hurt.

However, this has been one of the coldest December's on the record books and for about three days it was below 20F. My check engine light would stay on longer each day, meaning when I started it up, all the lights lit up as usual, then the check engine one stayed on longer than normal. On the third day I took it to a friend's garage where I could get it indoors (it was snowing out) and check the oil level. Sure nuff, it was just above the fill line when cold. I dropped in about half a quart and haven't seen the problem since, that was two weeks ago and we've had even colder days since.

Just a suggestion.
i'll check that.
thanks for the suggestions guys.
