Arrow Whirring noise after cold start?

I'm new to PT cruisers and just bought a 2001 limited edition which had only one loving owner and only 60K miles. Very happy with the car which is rock solid, reliable and best of all cheap to run.

I'm just about to take it for it's first oil change which is due at 63K and was wondering what the best type of oil is for the vehicle? I also seem to be suffering from a whirring sound when I start the car in the morning and pull away with a full lock. The sound is there under power on full lock (left or right) for about 2 minutes and then goes away.

Any ideas what this could be, I was wondering if it's the main belt which also does the power steering I think? Any advice would be great as I am sending it for a service as I said earlier and would like to change anything early to avoid problems at a later date.

Many thanks,

Dan, welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the forum. As I read your post, your pulling away from a dead stop with the steering wheel turned (left or right) in full lock position and the noise stays there for 2 minutes even when you straighten the wheel out.

The belt has a tensioner and it's possible that might have a problem or it might be the power steering unit itself where the "full lock" sets something in motion and gradually goes back to normal. How about the power steering fluid itself? Has it been looked at to see if you need some fluid?

Thanks for the tip, I'll check the fluid tonight.

I was just interested to know if there was a known problem with the single belt, which appears to drive everything.

I'll let you know once I've check over her tonight.

Best Regards

hi there,

my cruiser had this problem, the noise sounded rather funnily like Chewbacca from Star Wars...

read on another forum somewhere that the PSF needed to be a couple of mm above the "full" mark on the reservoir, topped it up to just above the mark and not heard the noise since!
hope this helps if you have not already cured it.
