Default RPM Hesitation and Popping From Exhaust??

2003 Pt Cruiser non-turbo.

I made a video that shows that when I rev it in Park, it goes to 4000 then hesitates. Also the exhaust pipes makes a pop when reving, but not when driving.

it's perfectly normal and if you try to take it off, i've bee told that it would be messing with the emissions on the car and it wouldn't be street legal. well here in texas maybe. and i'm guess you may have just gotten the car, and it's the first car you've had with a limiter? right?

The rev limiter serves a wide variety of purposes, including emissions controls. It also keeps us from doing to our PTs what a friend did to his mother's 1962 Chevy with Powerglide when I was in high school. He revved it to red line in neutral, then popped it into Drive just to see what would happen. What happened was a great clashing, gnashing of metal, friction bands, and disintegrating bits of transmission, followed by his being grounded for life. And, I might add, it was something he richly deserved.

I did the same thing showing off to the other kids at the bus stop way back in about 1963. It's was my parents almost brand new Pontiac Straight 8 (anybody remember them)? Revved it up in neutral and and threw the column shifter into drive. A big bang and the spider gear between the drive shaft and the rear end gears went into pieces. The big ole Pontiac slowly rolled back down the slope with me hunched down into the drivers seat, face all red. Lots of laughs from the crowd. Needless to say, mom and dad weren't pleased.

The torque from a straight 8 was absolutely astounding. Misused, it would do exactly as Crewzin described.
