Default Help 2005 or 2007

Hi, I have never posted anywhere before so I hope you will be kind. I am looking at PT convertibles I found a 2005 GT turbo 30000 miles and 2007 base in line 42000, both are the same price and both are 2 hours away. For two weeks I have been reading everything I could find on PTs . I am so confused. I thought Turbo was the way to go till I read your forum about over heating. Any advise or opinions would be great. Thanks. PS. And what does Stage 1 mean?

What overheating? I've had my '04 GT since new and I've never had a problem with overheating. There is no overheating problem with the turbo. Not when they first came out in '03 and thru the last model year they produced the turbo. Stage 1 is a plug and play way to increase power over stock. They don't make them new any more so you'd have to buy used. All in all I'd go with the turbo over the non turbo any day. I've had both.

The convertible weighs more and you're better off with the turbo.
If you look deeper, there is a third choice - a turbo that isn't a GT and uses regular gas.
Base, non-turbo PT - 150 HP
Turbo, non-GT - 180 HP
GT turbo - 220 HP (needs premium gas)

Drive a base and a turbo, and I guarantee you'll want a turbo.
No issues with ANY PT - just be sure to use synthetic oil in all turbos -(and can't hurt in regular PTs)

I'll agree .... every time I drive my 06 Base I think how much better the drive would be in my 01 Turbo Beetle. That Beetle ruined me for most other cars. The 06 Base is very peppy though, mine has a manual tranny so I drive it using all that flexibility.

Thank you, 2004GTMAN. That's good to know. There is alot out there on PTs but I like to hear what the people driving them say. And thank for telling me what stage 1 is, but I won't be working on or adding to my car. I don't have a heavy foot but I don't want to get crushed on the highway.

WOW, Great Help. Thanks guys. I did look into the 180hp it gets bad gas mileage and bad reviews. Since both I am looking at are automatic the turbo looks like the better buy. Anything else you can think of I would love to hear.

Show us the links to your candidates.

To be truthful, you need to look at a few. Where you located?

A nicely maitained PT is the way to go. The GT's are nicely equipped.

I wouldnt rule out any PT as long as it has been maintained.

Thank you all for your help wish I had done this two weeks ago. I recognize names from post I have read on what type gas, oil, coolant etc. to use. I only have drove one so far. 2005 GT in bad shape. Wheels/rims were gashed and bent , and I popped the hood before I started it [learned that on one of these forums] the smell of gas was real strong and the trunk lid only opened to my chest. Salesman said that was it. I think the car was in a flood or something. I liked driving it. I sat in an 06 [here] not as comfortable. I went to look at one Sat. got all the way down there and the salesman I talked to twice had to go. Well the car wasn't there but it took 2 hours to find that they couldn't get it there. Was at a garage getting a engine senser replaced. Going to go back down this Sat. Sooo is there something that would let me know if it was taken care of or not? This one belonged to someone who works for the dealership. So how would I know if they used the cheaper gas or oil? Is there a telltale sign? I will try to post links [nobody buy my cars till I get one.] Thanks.

That's hard to say for the Gas ..... the first used Turbo Beetle I drove was at the local Audi/Porsche/VW dealer, I waited a while for the salesman that took it home for the night to show up with it. When he arrived I remarked that at least it was a turbo as I was shopping for one, he said "I didn't know it was a turbo!" I am sure he had driven a few turbo Porsches but the VW and Audi A4 turbos drive the same so he should have known .... I drove it and noted the same experience. It was an 00 which has a smaller turbo than the midyear 01 and later, but the real reason I did not feel the power was that the dealership and maybe previous owners had put 87 Octane Regular in a car that requires 91 or more, so the power was not there. So when driving the car if you notice it does not have the power it should have when the turbo spools up, it is probably because they are saving the price of a Grande Latte at Starbucks per tank and not treating the car the way they should, probably in other ways also.

Now the 01 Beetle I own .... the BMW saleman was surprised at the power when we took off ... too bad they gave it to a non enthusiast to detail before I took it home and they filled the almost empty tank with regular and lost my floormats somewhere. As for the oil, the leassee had left a reciept for the last quiky oil change .... I changed it again to Mobil 1 less than 300 miles after the mileage on the reciept because that reciept was for less than $20 .... and 5 quarts of M1 was about $25 at that time.

Chances are, if they are not enthusiasts or did not by the car to keep long term ... there is an 80% chance they did not use synth oil in their turbo car.

My kids car was owned by clean freaks ... the 01 had 64K on the odo when bought in Dec 09 .... the leather interior was imaculate with the only problem being the dash cover which cracks easily on the 01-05 model PT's. While they rubbed the clearcoat off in a few places in their endeavor to have the cleanest car in the world, it appears they did not fix mechanical issues right away and maybe did not maintain it like it should have been. But it is still running fine and I fix things when needed.

I love the tips and I will us them. Good one SilverSport. So if I buy the car and use the right gas and oil and take care of it the engine would it clean out and run well [ or till I die, joking] or is the damage done. I know you can't say without seeing the car, just looking for thoughts. Thanks.
