Default Stumbling '07 with No Codes

I have an '07 (~55K) with a screwball problem. Every few days the engine light will pop on, usually with no symptoms. Sometime after it lights (as little as a minute or as long as 20 miles), the car loses speed and refuses to take the pedal. Feels like fuel starvation, no roughness and it still idles, but it bucks the throttle and won't go anywhere. Turning off the key and re-starting seems to cure it 99% of the time, and re-starting twice cures it 100%. Repeated "key dances" yield no codes (even right after the problem occurs), just "_ _ _ _ _" and then "dOnE".

I'm a former mechanic (till ~'86) who still fixes his own vehicles, but this has me clueless. If the car was an '84 Honda, I'd point straight to the fuel pump. Is there any way the fuel pressure or flow on a PT could be failing without the ECU "noticing" a fault?

I'd appreciate any PT-expert feedback.

PS - I won't swear it isn't a bad ECU... the Airbag icon has been intermittently popping on for months with no passenger and/or all belts fastened, so maybe Pinky's Brain is frying. Opinions?

Did you put a code scanner on it? I can't even get my 06 to show codes with the keydance, it works on the 01 though, but the 06 with a solid MIL and codes I can scan does not even get me into the code reading.

To me it sounds like what I got from the Cam Position Sensor. I have a standard and was unable to go above 1500 RPM when the MIL was lit... when I cleared codes most times it would run fine until the next time the MIL came on when starting the vehicle again. See if a scanner can read anything.

No, I haven't scanned it, my friend owns an '03 and I thought the key dance was universal. Does it not work on the later models?

Don't think it's exactly the same prob as yours, though. This thing can run fine for miles with the light lit, then all of a sudden it's bucking ugly. Like I said, smells like fuel to me (metaphorically, of course).

It should show in odometer but I would repalce the cam sensore since it is easy and when they do start to fail you will run into issues like you describe. again, get a mopar sensor. If it turns out to be something else keep it as a spare in the glove box, kind of like the old ballast resistor for Darts or HE pickups on the 2.2/2.5 Turbos

Okay, update. Took it to the parts store but the ECU didn't upload any codes. It talked, but no codes. Took it to a second store to make sure their scanner wasn't defective. Engine light was on when I arrived, but still no codes. I didn't think that was possible with the light active. Is my ECU fried?

Sometimes Manufacturer Specific codes are not picked up by the OBD-II readers. For my VW I have a code reader that reads OBD-II from almost all cars, but will give me the Airbag and Transmission codes (If I had an Auto) on a VW.

The OBD-II codes are uniform across MFG's and refer to emmisions and engine warnings for the most part. Below is an explanation of the codes from Bentley Publishers, the publisher of most European Factory repair manuals and the ones I use for my VW's.

First digit structure is as follows:

Pxxxx for powertrain
Bxxxx for body
Cxxxx for chassis
Uxxxx for future systems

Second digit structure is:

P0xxx Government required codes
P1xxx Manufacturer codes for additional emission system function; not required but reported to the government

Third digit structure is:

Px1xx measurement of air and fuel
Px2xx measurement of air and fuel
Px3xx ignition system
Px4xx additional emission control
Px5xx speed and idle regulation
Px6xx computer and output signals
Px7xx transmission
Px8xx transmission
Px9xx control modules, input and output signals

The fourth and fifth digits designate the individual components and systems.

Thanks for the feedback... if there are "manufacturer-specific" codes in there, is there any way to retrieve them short of a visit to Mr. Chrysler?

Maybe a shop with a Snap-On or other high end code reader may be able to get it. It should show something if the MIL is lit.
