Default Gas Cap?

Hey all. My 'vert came with a locking gas cap and I swear the thing is broken. Just put in my 2nd tank of gas yesterday and I could not get the thing to lock down no matter what I tried. It goes on and stays tight, but one firm twist and it comes right off. Also, it has no dangle strap so when I take the thing off I just have to hold it in my hand while I fuel up... which is annoying.

Were these locking caps factory? Can I get a regular non-locking cap to replace it with? I'm really not worried about someone fiddling with my gas tank.

None of the PT's came with a locking gas cap. Whoever owned your PT before you put it on. If Chrysler had put one on, it would still have the tether strap. You can buy a non locking cap at any auto store or if you have a salvage yard in the area with a crashed PT, it would probably still have the cap with the strap on it.

one other thing, you gotta make sure it creates a good seal when you tighten it. If not you might get a check engine light or a your display may say "Gas Cap".

I wonder why they just don't put a locking door on the car, like Honda, VW and so many others do.

Good luck on the pick a part places, around here they have told me the PT cruisers don't stay there long before they are all picked out when the do get them.

After leaving my locking gas cap on a gas pump 300 miles away, I now put the cap in my pocket. When I reach for the keys I know whether or not I put the cap on!!!

Not sure why you need a locker on these cars unless you're parking in a really bad area. I've tried to siphon gas out of my PT and gave up, just too much work...lol

I bought a locking cap from Canadian Tire, I think it was $18. Every now and then I get a check engine light, it says "major vac leak" on my scan tool. It always is the cap, now I check it once in a while and just give it a few clicks.

I used the tether that was on the original cap, it has a "snap in" fitting or
"push pin"; You can just drill the proper size hole in the top of the new cap and it works like factory.
And, no, me making a hole in it doesn't cause it to leak, the seal is below that part of the cap. I've done this on a couple of others with no problems.

You can also get yourself some thin cork and cut a ring to fit it to add to the seal. Works great.
