Default Stock Exhaust vs. Catback

So when i was getting estimates for my Super 44 a few month's ago, they lifted Eve and i got to see the full exhaust piping. To me, it kinda looks like the stock exhaust is already a cat back, but then again i've never seen a real catback in person. Am i wrong in thinking this?

Magnaflow Catback

What's the difference, besides the Cat converter and the muffler?

Everything behind the converter is basically a "cat back",it's just not a "performance" catback. The catback systems look pretty much the same as stock, unless you go with a dual system, but they are more free flowing. The systems I installed in the past looked basically like the stock system and even used the stock hangers, they just had bigger piping and a free flow muffler.Hope this makes sense.

Danny,

Yes your stock exhaust does "look" like a Cat back. They call it CAT Back because the new parts start at the exit of the CAT. The new pipe itself is mandrel bent which means there's no hard turns and the pipe is 2 1/2 inches (or whatever you buy) and it stays at 2 1/2 from tip to tip. Non-mandrel pipes go thinner at the bends. Also the exhaust muffler itself is a flow-thru type rather than chambered like the stock exhaust.

So, from the output of the CAT, the exhaust flows out in one smooth flow............

SCBluePT you beat me too it.

The stock is 2 1/4 dia.

Unless you go to 2 1/2 I doubt you would see much improvement and your still stuck with the stock Cat.

I have a 2 month old flowmaster 40 original series axle back with a nice oem looking tip that I would gladly trade for oem axle back in good condition. Too bad im in San Diego CA and no one around here is looking for one. I used to love the louder exhausts 10 years ago but now, im over it.
