Default Low idle stall issues.

i have a 2002 PT Cruiser with 215,000 miles on it. Recently when I started it,and drove it, when the idle would get low, it would die. The only way i can describe it is it reminds me of an old car i had, my dad would adjust the carb because the idle was so low it would die.

it doesn't happen when i'm driving, just at a stop, or when starting it. Its very random, sometimes it happens 10-15 times while driving in town, to never doing it at all. Our bonehead mechanic can't find out the problem, so his solution was to try and replace the fuel pump with modular. (which we did, and it really hasn't made much of a difference)

Any suggestions? i love my car, so i want to get her fixed, but we have no clue where to go or what to do! HELP

oops ETA: there is no check engine light, mechanic hooked the codes thing (sorry can't think of the word) and nothing came up

When was the last time spark plugs and wires were changed? Had the throttle body ever been cleaned? It could also be a problem with the EGR system.

At 215,000 miles you should also be doing the timing belt/water pump for the second time, if that hasn't been done yet...

Agree with all of Joel's ideas in his post.
Also - Idle air Controller - bolts to back of throttle body - should be taken off and checked/cleaned.
Throw some Lucas fuel injection cleaner in the gas.

thank you so much for the ideas, we're on it now.

the timing belt and water pump are new. the plugs and wires were just done, and oddly enough, the car started having the issue about 2 weeks after they were done. does that info work here?

oh, and yes, the throttle body was cleaned. It improved a bit after that, but still has the issues. Just not as much.

Do you know what the spark plug gap was set to? It should be 0.040"

I think I would look at the EGR system.

hub is going back to the mechanic who did the plugs and they are going to check out the plugs.

So, speaking as an uninformed girl, i notice when people talk about EGR, there's always some mention about spark plugs. Coincidence? or could that be the real problem to begin with. As i may i have said, it started w/in 2 weeks after the plugs/wires were replaced.

The egr is exhaust gas recirculation, its an emissions device.

update:

hub cleaned throttle body. Then he pulled hose off the EGR valve, started the car, idled up, and put the hose back on, and then it idled back down. He looked inside the hose, it looked a little moist, and a very strong smell of gas. but it was dry and wasn't leaking fuel.

anyone have anything?

From your description, sounds like he played with PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventillation) not EGR. The PCV valve should be replaced - I think it's only like $15.
