Default harmonic balancer

Hi Guys

I have been trying to source a vibration problem on my 2001 2.0L PT. I have posted a couple of time before and still trying to track this down.

I notice a few postings talking about a harmonic balancer. Can someone explain what this is?

I have checked, as best I can, the upper and lower torque struts and they seem OK, no signs of cracking, also the top strut is adjusted to 4.7".

Vibration is there all the time whilst driving but worse when pulling away or accelerating. Seems to be related to revs rather than speed or road condition.

The 4 cylinder engine in your PT delivers a power stroke every 180 degrees of crankshaft rotation. Since the power application is not smooth but rather in pulses, the harmonic balancer, mounted on the nose of the crankshaft, helps to dampen out these pulses and thus make life easier on the crankshaft.

A harmonic balancer can fail...usually it is a matter of the rubber deteriorating. However, you may or may not notice if it has failed.

Right Carl! You could simply look at it, you'd notice failure.

Flexplate to clutch / torque converter bolts can come loose.

You could pull inspection cover (PT has a lot of brackets there, IIRC) and look.

So engine makes the vibes even when revved in neutral?
