Default Error Code 0401

I know that the code means there is insufficient flow in the EGR. Is the best fix just to replace the EGR valve? It's an 01 PT Cruiser.

Most of the stuff I'm reading does say to replace the EGR.

Got the code on my cruiser, and bought an egr valve from Napa. These instructions are good, except I have a dumb question. How do you unlock the electrical plug? It looks like the red tab is supposed to slide out. It is in a hard location to reach and worse with two hands trying to pinch one side and pull on the other.

I've haven't replaced it myself, but are we talking about the same EGR valve? I don't see any electrical connection.

The kit from Napa comes with the valve and a solenoid.

Here is a site with pictures, the third shows the electrical connection

BWD EGR1575 - EGR Valve | O'Reilly Auto Parts

Those pictures had to be taken with the engine out of the car, I don't have anything link that much room around the valve.

As I said, haven't had to change mine. The picture comes from the Haynes manual and YES, it's a good chance they probably pulled the engine in order t get some of the pictures in the book.

The book does mention a "transducer solenoid". It tells how to take that electrical connection apart. Quote:"to unlock the EGR transducer solenoid electrical connection, push the red tab away from the solenoid and pull off the connector".

I have tried that, and I have put a screwdriver in between the red tab and the gray plug and pried away from the soledoid, but the red tab does not move.

I was wondering if there is a tab to lift or ends to squeeze together where the red tab protudes on the side toward the solenoid that releases it and allows it to slide. That side is well hidden, being between the egr valve and the tube going up to the intake manifold. I don't want to break the plug.

Here's a picture I just took from the Chilton manual.
