What problem areas on the first generation (2001-2005) PT Cruisers were corrected when the second generation (2006-2010) was released? I know there are body style changes but I'm looking to see what service problem areas were corrected and what problem areas were not corrected.

Here's a link to all the changes in the 2nd generation cruisers.

The Second Generation: 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser

In my opinion, in seeing all the problems that come here to the forum, I think the new electrical system was a bad change. Chrysler went to the Controller Area Network (CAN) data bus circuit, (CANBUS). CAN Bus is a multiplexed wiring system used to connect intelligent devices such as Electronic Control Units (ECU's) onto vehicles, allowing data to be transferred in a low-cost and reliable manner.

It all sounds good but I see more electrical problems on this forum that can't be diagnosed and fixed by a simple changing of a fuse like in the 1st generation.

I'm not at all familiar with the CANBUS.

Sounds like the block was redesigned in '03 (actually, it was partially redesigned in '02) with some type of unusual thrust bearing.
Head is slightly different but no practical difference.

The manual transmission (T-350) got differential saver tabs sometime past '02.

Wheel bearings became wider in '02, should be an improvement but it sure doesn't sound like it.

I know from scrapping several items changed in '04, minor such as the rear WW motor.

I remember reading on Consumer Reports about the PT and the year differences.

I wanted a newer model because the first run on most vehicles isnt that great, especially in our price range.

The newer model tends to address the first models weak points, not to say its going to be perfect.

I liked the fact that the horsepower numbers increased on the second gen too.

The styling was minimal, yes I prefer the front of the 1st gen, but they cant run that same look forever.

The interior of the 2nd generation, minus the towel bar is a step above the first imho.

I didnt buy mine to count what number it was, how "rare" it is or anything like that.

I chose one to suit my needs, GT, 5 speed, low miles, good condition, and I found it.

I did have to drive from Texas to Iowa to buy the GT though.

Most people I show my car to really dont care if its a DC DC2 PCH, etc etc.

In other words, I buy and mod for me

To each his own, good day

Oh, after '01 5th gear changed to a higher ratio in the T-350.
This engine and trans has been around forever, so not much need to test-
The chassis is semi-based on the PL body, ball joint part numbers (IIRC) were around since early 80's, etc., so lots was the same

I hear what you mean tho, OEM's are notorious for NOT correcting problems.
Omni/Horozion, throughout their 13 year run developed door handle problems, they made some flunky shield to keep dust off, but it was a half-hearted attempt, etc., etc.
2.7. V-6's they tried to fix, but they were still junk, unfortunately
