Default Is there any way to tell if a timing belt has been changed?

I'm going to a used car dealership to test drive an '02 with a 5 speed with 115,800 miles and I'm wondering if anyone knows if there is any way to determine if a PT has had it's timing belt changed. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Good question! I would take it to a Chrysler dealership and pay for the inspection that way you make sure the car will be the right for you! Trust me is better to invest a extra $80.00 dollars to make sure your not buying a pain in the b#%!!!

I would find a PT with fewer miles personally.

You may pay more for it, alot of miles from an unknown person had it with no records, the more likely I am to run from it.

thats just me though

good luck

I agree with Busa but like Rocketman said, an experience mechanic would be able to tell you if all the things that have to be taken off and moved to do the timing belt, were moved or everything looks like it's never been touched.

I am not sure how accurate this is but when I got my timing belt replaced I noticed the timing belt cover on the passenger side of the engine was changed from a bluish-black smooth plastic cover to a cover with a black raised checkerboard pattern cover.

However, I would get it inspected as mentioned before.

Must have broke the cover. Not a normal replacement item in a belt change.

When I had the belt changed I actually asked for all the old parts and they gave me back the old timing belt cover. I now have it as a trophy in my garage.

Just read on here somewhere about some kits, were the cover is included. Something to do with a different tensioner.

The higher end (reads more money) kits will have the newer style tensioners with covers included. If you're putting the new and improved tensioner on an 03 (I believe) or older engine, then you will need the new cover OR your mechanic can just notch the old cover to clear the new style tensioner. That's taking for granted that the mechanic can think on his feet and can see what obviously needs to be done. Simple mod.

They make plastic tooth depth gauges (look like a small, short toothed hair comb) that are meant to check the remaining rib material left on serpentine belts. The problem on our 2.4s is that to use the gauge you have to remove the upper torque strut and then the upper timing belt cover. Then its "right there". You should be checking the general condition (cracking, lengthwise wear patterns, etc.) of the belt.
