Ok, so I bought my first (used) car in 2010 & its a 2005 PT Cruiser 2Dr convertible w/ Turbo engine. It had 34K miles on it.
I messed up & was very irresponsible on its maintenance schedule.. i didnt change the oil for just about a year. Now the engine has 50K on it & has blown up.. its sitting in the shop. My Dad is furious with me & is saying he refuses to help me financially to fix it bc its my own fault. I did purchase an extended warranty when i bought the car, but again, that wont help either bc im at fault. Now, my Dad is suggesting that I just sell the car without a working motor & that I ride the bus to work to teach me a lesson. Does anyone know how I would go about pricing the car wo an engine? Or any ideas as to how I could fix it again on my limited income? Any advice would be welcome at this point.. thanks so much guys! |

First of all, the engine should not blow up just because the oil wasn't changed for 16K miles. If the blowup was oil related, then it was probably because of low oil and the car should have given you plenty of warning to a low oil or low oil pressure situation.
So the first thing to do is to definitively determine if the blow up was oil related. If so, then you must accept the responsibility for your actions or in this case your lack of action. Your least expensive route is probably a used engine from a salvage yard. |

When u say blow up what exactly happened when u were driving the car? I also agree with last reply on the junkyard engine except u might want to go for a N/A engine alot easier to come by and probably cheaper. Then later on when your situation is better u could rebuild your turbo engine.

When i was driving on the freeway i noticed a smell & when i stepped on the gas pedal it was acting sluggish & then began deccelerating even tho i was pumping the pedal. Then when i got off at the nearest exit & stopped at the red light, it was exuding a thick white smoke. I made to to a friends house & had it towed to a shop from there. The shop said oil had gotten into places it wasnt supposed to be.

I'm thinking that it sounds like a head gasket type of thing.
Get the shop to give you a detailed report of exactly what is wrong with the car. "oil where it shouldn't be" is about as clear as mud, and could mean a lot of different things. I could be mistaken, but I don't think that not changing the oil will cause a head gasket to go out. N/A means naturally aspirated aka non turbo Exco
