Default Power Steering Failure at Low Revs

Hi All,

I got my 2007 PT Cruiser Cabrio 2.4 petrol (UK model) in early December 2011. The power steering developed a fault around Christmas and I just got the car back from the garage after leaving it with them in early January! Apparently, there were delays with the parts. It has 24,000 miles on the clock.

Anyway, the problem is still occurring. When the car is warmed up and idling, the power steering seems to stop and the steering is heavy. As soon as the accelerator is depressed and revs get above 1, power steering returns. When driving, the steering is fine but when I'm parking or waiting in a line of traffic, the power steering stops.

The garage replaced the power steering pump and when the problem persisted, they discovered swarf in the system so replaced the steering rack and needed to install a second new pump - the problem continues.

All this work has been done under warranty and I have now got an appointment with an official Chrysler garage who will do a diagnostic check.

Has anyone had this problem? What could be causing the problem?

I read online about a need to clean or replace the reservoir which has a fine mesh filter inside. The garage said they completely flushed out the system when they were replacing the pumps so would this eliminate the reservoir being the problem?

Any advice gratefully received!

Jeff

Gee, no idea.

Sounds like they did what one would expect them to do in that situation.

Things really hard to steer with no power steering, eh?
