Talking Why The Empty Posts?

I notice that, now and then, a post heading about some type of electronic gear is nothing more than the title. It is/was obviously spam and apparently deleted. I don't understand why the entire post isn't removed, instead of gutting it and leaving the title.

Best guess is its a program that is built into the forums, to say simply. It notices the member posted spam and their ip is faked and then erases the poster and their posts. However probably due to the possibility that the forums software knows maybe real people were communicating in that topic it leaves it there.

If crewzin or another mod were on here often they usually delete the whole topic

I run a PhpBB board and Spam comes in by the truck load!

I switched to personally approve each new member and that's worked.
You can't ban all 'bad' IP's, they can get a new one in a 1/10 of a second

I am a super moderator on another Mopar board that is also V bulletin. I deal with spammers all the time and ban them immediately from the board. However, when I delete their posts, the entire post is gone. The post heading does not remain. I don't understand why they aren't removed here.

Probably because you are removing the post yourself.

The forums have always been patroled by crewzin who is currently away. Since hes not here to catch all the spam that gets through the forums protections the automated system has to do it.

I believe they use SFS for the spam protection. It will instaban any known spamming usernames and ips or people using anonymizers. If by chance a spammer gets through they may be able to do a run (ie post the same thing in multiple forums at the same time) at which point once someone from one SFS supported site bans them for spam they get added to the SFS blacklist which then removes them on all sites using SFS. The SFS program may only delete the post vs the whole thread.

When crewzin is here though the whole thread is deleted

OK, that makes sense. Yes, I do delete the posts myself.

But you can ban IP octet ranges
That's what I end up doing on another board I help run, seems to be effective.

We move all spam posts to a "Purge" forum that is hidden in staff so we can reference back to the IP's if needed, then purge that folder out over time.

Yes, I'm back now, for the most part, and the whole SPAM post gets wiped out and ip is banned when I clean up the forum. The admin has been looking into the forum while I've been in the hospital. Still in rehab now at the local nursing home and using the iPad that some of you chipped in to buy (more in another thread). Looks like I'll be released pretty soon, maybe early next week.
