Default Thinkin' on my POSSIBLE first PT

I have been pondering a PT for a while. I finally got my 99 Neon running great with NO leaks.

BUT upon driving home yesterday I spotted a black 01 PT Limited with pretty much every option with 94K on the clock.

A whole bunch of stuff had been replaced including the trans according to the paper stuck to the glass, for $1500!

There is a slight catch........Blown Motor. Now I am mechanically inclined, and swapping motors is second nature, hardest part is finding one.

My question is, is it worth it? The body from what i saw is very clean, no signs of rust, but of course it was locked, and I could not check under the doors. The interior looked real good, very detailable. Toys wise, it has a chrome grille, wing on the back, vent shades, and the factory chrome 5 spoke wheels that appear in nice shape.

I have tied to call (message) and will be calling very shortly again, for details, and to see how the motor was ruined.

One of the "new parts" was a timing set. I am wondering if it was the "hoping the valves did not crash when the belt broke" syndrome, and attempted a new belt with no luck. If that is the case, maybe just a head. We'll see soon enough.

Should I do it? of course I will lowball the price at first, worth a shot though.

The 2.4 Ltr engine is a non-interference so there's a slight chance the owner might have bent a couple valves and he gave up, not wanting to put any more time and money into a 2001 so yes you could just do some head work.

The timing belt job is an expensive proposition (around $10000 and if that's already done, your experience should make the head job a piece of cake.

Figured it was a not brainer since I just put a motor in my Neon, and it is pretty much the same (but different) animal.
Only issue I see, is the bit of cramt conditions under the hood.

Offer them 500$, a non-running car is worth squat, most around here are hauled away to the local bone yard.

I would never pay 1500 for a non running car. There could be other issues like trans, electrical etc. It can become a money pit.

Oh it will be quite a lowball offer.

I just talked to the owner. He says his wife overheated it (left cap loose), number 3 is not firing. It does run though, with no rod knock.

Maybe just a head gasket! or at the most, head work with gasket.

He has a laundry list of parts that have been replaced, like I mentioned earlier even the transmission, along with front end parts, brakes, struts, radiator (I imagine the fan too).

He is supposed to call me later today, when he is in the area, so I can give it a closer look.

OK, OK, I might have thrown in an extra Zero, or maybe I was thinking of my Vette.

Well I'd like to of paid less, but the guy was tryin to make up some of the costs on all the new parts.
Can't say as I blame him. Year old trans, new rad, brakes, tie rod ends, hoses, belts, head (of course his wife took care of that).
Seems he just had the belt and head done, just to have her drive it with a loose rad cap, and over heated it.
He had the the cylinder scoped and saw a hole in #3 piston. I figure I'll yank the head and mike the cylinder walls , if not too bad I will put a piston in and have the head fixed (again).
I checked out the body pretty good and the only rust is real slight surface under the rear wing and just starting on the lift gate lower hem on the inner panel. The doors hood, rockers are perfect. No major dents, just a minor light crease on the gate (no brainer for paintless dent removal).
I ended up giving a grand for it, I feel it is worth it just being the body and interior are near perfect. Only real interior problem is the upper dash pad is cracked and missing the defrost grille, no biggie. Oh yeah one cigarette burn>
I can't rally lose on this one, Kelly is $4500 to $5500 on a plain Jane. I should be able to have under 2K if all goes well.
I pick it up tomorrow.
A real nice guy. Gave me the key and owners manual, before he has any cash. I guess I look trust worthy.
Of course the GF is shaking her head, as I just got the Neon right, and now I start all over again ( a sickness I guess ).

Well do a thread on its resurrection, take and post some pics.

At the local yard there seems to be a lot of early PT;s coming in, so I will be pillaging.
