Default New Owner - 2001 Cruiser - cannot start

Hello everyone,
I was just given a 2001 PT Cruiser - 86,000 miles in excellent condition,,,
with one caveat ,,,,,,, will not ATTEMPT to start - no voltage to the solenoid
when the key is turned - no clicking like a dead battery - nothing.
I have 2 keys ,,, one with the original remote which does operate the locks,
and a second one with a remote for an Avital remote start, which DOES NOT
work - does not activate the locks.
Everything in the vehicle works, but something has shut down the ability to start the engine ?

The original owner was trying to find out why the engine was getting hot -
a garage estimated a head replacement at $3,000.00 and it then sat for
a year ,,, while he waited for me to have some time to try to help him.
He replaced the thermostatic fan switch and then tried to apply 12V to
test the fan motor ,, at this point he had also replaced the battery.
which of these might have caused the problem ?? OR ,,,, a coincidental 3rd
problem appeared ?? BUT ,,, it now has no signal voltage to the Solenoid.
Dealer suggested that the keys might have died ?? ,,,, or a bad module ?

I have already tested all relays ,,, and related fuses ,,,, but am at a loss on
coded keys ,,,, or the possibility of the Remote start being in a "no-start" ??
The remote start installers are NOT suppose to cut the starter wire, just
bare the wire and tap the voltage ,,,,, 2 different installers have told me
that it should not be the problem ,, since the battery was just replaced
and that the remote cannot function ,,,, it should be needing a reset ??

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated ,,,,, hate to waste money going to
the wrong people ,,, Chrysler dealer or Avital - until i can figure out which is
the problem :--( ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

If Im not mistaking, The starter wire under the dash to the relay does get cut... that is the only way to interupt power to the relay. SO , if it has a remote start then that I think is the issue. I would remove it and see if it starts, then go from there. If the wire is cut, it will need to be spliced back together in order for power to reach the relay. I have heard alot of issues with the remote starts...that may be a starting point and possibly the cheapest fix.

What if any lights are on the dash?

when you turn the key does the ignition feel normal? there's a stupid little poorly designed piece in there that likes to snap off

if you turn the key to run and jump the solenoid on the starter does it start?

Thank you for the responses :--)

Yes i will try looking for a cut wire to see if i can disable the remote start.

I just spent another hour chasing voltages ,,,,, and reading about the immobilizer ?? anti-theft ??
dealer said sitting for a year and changing batteries could have "lost" coded keys ?? I have 2 ,,,, neither work.

anti-theft wiring looks pretty sophisticated ,,,,,,,,,,

pulled the starter relay and jumped it ,,,,,,,,,, it turned over ,,,
but does not start ,,,,,, presuming no spark or fuel ??

little red light in center of left dash pod is on ,,, while sitting here.

What about reading codes ?? 3 times with key switch will not provide
anything ? looking for "done" ? nothing changes with the odometer display.

That little red lite I think is the key to all of this.

My car starter disables the codes being read on the odometer, so that may be the problem for that part.
That red light could be that your key is not being read right and there for not starting. ( cars anti-theft system) Red dot is a security lite if im right.

At this point I would just suggest taking it to a dealer. But that is just my opinion.

Chigger,

My whole decision has been trying to decide which dealer to take it to ,,, ?
Chrysler ,,,,, or the Avital installer. In removing base of the steering column
it exposes the factory key reader ,,,, which has a plastic loop around the
ignition ,,, AND the Avital system has another wired loop around the switch.
One or the other has the system locked down ,,,,,,,,,, BUT ,,,,, since
the Avital remote does not work ,,, it seems to me that the Chrysler dealer
is the way to go. I have been trying to find a factory service manual set,
to see if i can find the test sequences to check it all out.
Both systems seem to need to re-establish the coded keys since the battery
went dead. Seems a far stretch to require a visit to the dealer to get it all
done ,,, just from a dead battery ?? One dealer said that the 1 year inactive
stint migiht have something to do with it also ,,,, a focus of losing your keys
and not having someone else show up with your keys and steal your car ??
Any way ,,, I will work on getting a service manual ,,, and go from there.
Thanks for all of the information :--) ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Hi, I'm new to Pt's, but the security in most cars works the same way. The fact that the red light is on means the security system has been triggered. The fact that the battery was replaced will not effect the remote start or the BCM from remembering the key code. It is not necessary to disconnect the wiring from the remote start, just remove the fuses that power it. They will be in the harness from the remote start unit usually 6-8 inches from the module. It is possible the key has died, but both at once seems unlikely. Take the key to Ace hardware and ask them if they can clone it. If the key reads for them it is not dead. The fact that the remote start uses a separate sensor ring means it is an older unit. Some of those could be flaky, but rarely cause a no start issue. If you decide to take it to the dealer, disconnect the remote start first and tell them it is disconnected, otherwise that will be their first diagnosis. They hate aftermarket parts. A service manual is a must if you intend to repair things yourself. Good luck! Let me know if I can help.

Take it to your Chrysler dealer. Two things stood out to me: The fact that your security system light is on, and the fact that with the key in and starter relay jumped, it will turn over but not start.

The engine will not start if it doens't recognize the key. I think you have either a couple bad keys, or a bad RKM. I've seem more RKM's fail than keys, but I've also seen a few bad keys. This is where you need to start.
