Default Anti theft vs PCM - 2001 Cruiser

I was given a 2001 PT Cruiser that will not start ,,,, (Old thread)

I now have a service manual that states that the red light in the left dash pod stays on indicating DRB III codes set ,,,, (anti-theft)

I towed vehicle to a dealer asking them to read the DRB III codes ,,,,
$92.00 for an hour of diagnostics ,,,,,, for which i was told that the PCM is
bad ,,,, AND that they cannot do any more diagnostics until it is replaced ?

SINCE ,,,, i have a red light saying that codes are set ,,,, shouldn't they have been able to read the DRB III codes anyway without the engine running ?? ,,,,,,, i tried an OBD II reader - which said no codes set ,,,, and
the DRB III codes are read through the same "plug" - (with a different reader)
Am i being scammed ?

They want $450.00 for the new PCM + 145.00 for flashing it.
I can get a guaranteed used one for $75.00 ,,, which still might need flashing.
ANY IDEAS ??

Correct me if im wrong, and im sure someone will, but Im pretty sure the red light has to do with your transponder in your key, not the computer codes. I know anytime my '05 has thrown a code the check engine light has come on, not the little red light. Just sounds like to me it is not recognizing the chip in the key, if yours is so equipped with one, you said the car was givin' to you, did they give you the factory key?

I have 2 keys, neither work ,,,,, I talked to a locksmith ,,, and he said that
a non-chiped key will start the car, but then the SKIM will shut it down in
3-5 seconds when it senses no chip.

The red dash light comes on for 5 seconds when the key is turned on, then
goes out for 1 second, then comes back on again - which indicates a DRB III
code - which is suppose to be an anti-theft failure.

OBD II are standard codes most cars deal with ,,,, DRB III are additional
codes read from the same terminal with a $4,000.00 Chrysler device.

I towed the PT to the Chrysler dealer - 92.00/hr diagnostics - they said that
they could NOT read the DRB III codes because the PCM is bad ?? they said
that another module could NOT communicate with the PCM ??
$608.00 for a new PCM flashed to my vehicle.
I found a guaranteed used PCM for 75.00 ,,,,,, 145.00 for dealer to flash it,
BUT ,,, dealer said working with used PCM can fail being flashed ??
so spend 608.00 or risk spending 225.00 for nothing ?? confused ??

Not sure what service manual you have but the little red light has nothing to do with codes as Neoscruiser just said. Word for word in the 2001 Owners manual page 109:

Theft Alarm Light.
This lights will flash rapidly for several seconds when the alarm system is arming. The light will begin to flash slowly indicating that the system is armed.

NOTHING about codes being set. That's what the engine light or MIL (malfunction Indicator Light) is for.

This is cut/paste from the Vehicle theft/Security Systems
page 8Q-3 - which is the red bulb i am refering to ,,,

The SKIM sends messages to the instrument cluster,
to turn the LED on for about three seconds when
the ignition switch is turned to the ON position as a
bulb test. After completion of the bulb test, the SKIM
sends PCI bus messages to keep the LED off for a
duration of about one second. Then the SKIM sends
messages to the instrument cluster circuitry to turn
the LED on or off based upon the results of the SKIS
self-tests. If the VTSS indicator LED comes on and
stays on after the bulb test, it indicates that the
SKIM has detected a system malfunction and/or that
the SKIS has become inoperative.

For diagnosis or initialization of the SKIM and the
PCM, a DRB IIIt scan tool and the proper Powertrain
Diagnostic Procedures manual are required.

I just ordered a re-manufactured PCM re-set to my VIN and Mileage.
It will take a week to get here ,,, will post progress ,,,,,,,, tom

Just curious if you have a remote starter?

Find a new manual. As the others have told you, the red light has nothing to do with DRB codes. The DRB system is not an addition to OBD-II. The DRB is simply the factory OBD-II reader and communicates with each module of the vehicle. You can read every powertrain code with a generic scan tool that you can read with a DRB. The DRB simply gives you more information and allows you to perform vehicle specific tests, which you cannot do with a scan tool. The DRB also reads SRS and ABS codes, which most scan tools don't.

If the PCM is bad, it can lead to a malfunction of the anti theft system, which may be why your light stays on. The dealer is correct that they cannot diagnose a problem with a dead PCM, because they need to be able to communicate with the PCM in order to complete their diagnostics.

They are also correct that you may not have luck with a used PCM. It's kinda hit or miss. PCM failures are very common with these cars, and the dealer is not trying to take advantage of you.

Yes it does have a remote start, but it does not work, the remote does not
even open a door, nor does the reset button work. I had an installer try to
talk me through a reset, but nothing in the system works, it is all dead.
We pulled all of the 5 fuses in their system ,,, nothing helped.

The dealer said it would not interfere with their testing

I am not sure that getting rid of my Chrysler factory service manual would
help me, but i will look into it.

I would physically remove the remote starter unit, i have heard that even if it doesnt work it could still cuase interference with the Anti-theft. Just a thought.

FYI, I work for a Chrysler dealer and have access to the factory service manual as well as all the DRB equipment. If you are in fact using a factory manual, you are misunderstanding it. The anti theft light has NOTHING to do with DRB codes. Period.

Remote start can interfere with diagnostics if it was installed improperly, but the dealer will be able to tell that and work around it. If your PCM really is dead, then nothing you do with the remote start system will make any difference.
