Default Front fender rust

I was under my 2001 PT Cruiser today and painted the new crossmember and control arms. I looked under to see if there was more rust and found the underside to be real clean then I noticed under the right front fender behind the wheel there was crumbling muddy rust. I cut out the bad areas and was able to take out the two screws that held what was left of the fender. I plan to wash out under the fender, blow it dry and fabricate a new piece for the bottom of the fender. I can't understand where the muddy rust came from, I suspect a drain became clogged. My car has AC and a sunroof. Anyone else have this problem? Is this where the sunroof drains?

Are you talking about the area in front of the door where it raps under?

You should remove the inner fender liner and clean all the muck out, it builds up at the base of the wheel arch where the mud flaps go.

I Paint all my cars underneath to prevent that condition and every few years yank out the liners and clean the stuff out.

VNT is allover this one. Very common to get leaves and dirt in this area. Holds moisture and if left alone will rust this area.

Ditto!

In the Great White North, the leaves will cause water to run between fender/door then freeze.

Crunch.

You can flush area when you're at car wash; spray hose into plenum by windshield wipers, that area is where it drains.
Obviously, removing that piece of felt or whatever when you have the door open's better, but not easier

Yes VNT, that's the area I'm talking about Took out a cup of wet mush I will remove the liner as you suggested and flush out. Thanks, Barry
