Default Update August 20 - Bargain or am I asking for trouble?

OK so I know a guy through a friend who has a 2002 Dream Cruiser with 124k on the clock. The car looks well maintained cosmetically but he recently said the timing chain broke on his way home so he had it towed home.

The guy is down on his luck and is selling his toys and will take $1100 for the cruiser. Now I see values all over the place on this car from a low of 2800 to a high of just over 4000.

I "believe" a timing belt can be fixed for under a grand (700-900?) but I am concerned about other damage such as valves. Any thoughts?

Given my limited knowledge of Cruisers in general, I wanted to get some veteran opinions on this potential purchase, a bargain or trouble incoming?

non-interference engine. valves cannot hit the pistons. they can, rarely, hit each other, but highly unlikely unless the rpms were way up there when the belt broke.

even if the motor needs valves and a timing belt/water pump its a good deal valves are a easy diy job

I would assume worst case, ie needs head, price it out and see if it is worth it to you.

But remember if they were stupid enough to ignore the timing belt they probably neglected everything else too.

Ask for maintenance records from your pal, if he cant produce them walk away, unless you like projects.

Good point^

You see these things in JY's and they're just YUCK.
Oil is black, full of coolant, and everything's corroded.

You see people on here that have taken just basic care of their machine and engine is great after hundreds of thou!

Usually engine would have to be SEVERELY overheated to ruin the head, tho

Through $800 at him, if he takes it your sure to do well. Few people keep any records. That's the hard truth of the matter. The dreams are rare and that can be good and bad. Mechanical parts are the same though. If you get it for $800 or $1000 And spend a $1000. You have a car for 2k or less. What can you go buy for that?

Personally, I think the price is a steal already. If the guy really was hooked to his PT, I'd not ask him to reduce the price any. That's just my opinion, but then I'm a NICE GUY... lmao....

Give the guy $1100.00. That's cheap as it is. Be nice.

But ... check the oil. See if it's too low. Check the transmission fluid. See if it's nice and red--not brown. Check coolant level and see if it seems rusty (at the rad cap).

By the way, many people take care of their cars--oil changes, plugs, etc., but somehow neglect to change the timing belts. I used to be one of those people when I was younger and hadn't had a car that blew a belt at 157,000 miles (Honda Accord).

Most PT's that blow a timing belt on here don't blow the valves or pistons, either.

I'd buy it if all the above checks out. For sure!

Tim
