Question ? About buying a gt cruiser

I saw and ad for a 2003 gt cruiser for 2600$cdn with 107000kms (~66000 miles). The price seems good ( the guy is not advertising it as a gt, prob doesn't think it matters) for the mileage... just wonder if it's the real mileage.

Could anyone tell me what I should be looking for? If its only been on reg gas is that a deal breaker? This would be my very first car so I want to be sure it doesn't become a nightmare. Also it's an automatic gt if that matters.

Thanks

Ps I'm new to car mechanics. Just started to learn about alternators, timing belts etc

Not a mechanic but don't think it would matter about regular gas as long as it not a "High Output Turbo". It is normally marked on the rear under the Turbo 2.4 logo.
If I'm wrong I sure someone will correct me

Oh, I was under the impression all GTs are HOs...
That would explain why this GT doesn't have the HO label. I thought
maybe it had fallen off or he took it off

Well that's good to know ill save money on gas. If its not HO does that mean less HP?

Thanks

In 03 they didnt have an HO badge, in 04 they came out with a 180HP version so they added High Output badging to the GT

Test drive, ask for maintenance log book and records. If original owner ask if he has the window sticker and any other documentation.

Do key dance and check for codes. Look under oil cap on valve cover, if all sludged up keep looking.

Ask rather casually where he had oil changes done, and what kind of oil.

Do key dance and check for codes.

Lastly have a mechanic check it out, wont get burned that way.

Things to look for are bad Lower control arm bushings, make sure all the electrical works(door switches, windows, locks, radio, sunroof. etc), turn on AC and make sure it is cold and step out and make sure fan is running.

Take for spin, listen for noises, known for bad front wheel bearings, look in overflow tank make sure there is orange coolant, if green someone is using wrong coolant.

Oh the 03 HP was 215.

Does car have leather and heated seats?

If not mechanically inclined bring it to mechanic before you buy it

The GT (aka: high output) can run on regular, 86. The sticker on the fuel door and the manual says "premium recomended". (A stage 1 PCM is labeled "premium REQUIRED".) Anyway, the GT PCM will adapt to the regular grade fuel by dailing back the spark advance and boost for less power and less stress on the engine. Actually not a bad thing at all. I had a 250 mile per day job back when I owned my first GT and all I used was regular. It ran like a Swiss watch and even won a few stoplight challenges. The 50 trim, big turbo I own now is a different story altogether.

Personally, I would look for signs that the little tubes and hoses that route from the turbo to the solenoids and wastegate actuator have been hacked or replaced by non-stock looking hoses. That's the usual tell-tale that the boost has been raised higher than the factory settings.

look for iron worms in rocker area under the doors, especially in front of the rear wheel arches whee they rap underneath.

Some threads on here about rust with pictures.
