Default Car passed its MOT

For those of you who are not in the UK, the MOT is mandatory every year, and the car has a load of checks made on it. It passed with flying colours.

I was the only pass today. And after that accident recently I was interested to see if anything would come up.

Whiteclaw, I'm a Big fan of the British TV car program called Wheeler Dealer with Mike Brewer & Ed China. They run the shows here in the U.S. The guys are often referring to MOT, but I never know what it means. Please explain. Thanks

It is basically a test of the roadworthiness of a vehicle. So they test emissions from the car firstly which must fall within certain parameters or it can be a fail.

They check all lighting and the signals, 1 bulb out, you are done, fail, although some are nice folk and will just change it for the car to pass,. They check the body of the vehicle, the steering along with the suspension, the tyres and brakes etc.

There is a list somewhere on the net.

The thing is, if 1 thing on the list is gone, you fail the test, meaning the vehicle is not fit for the road. If something is on its way out, they will put it as an advisory. Basically, sort it by next time.

As of this year year though, there are far more things on the list for checks.

Just glad it passed.

I love wheeler dealer, although it is a bit aged now as a program.

that's pretty strict!

in chicago they check the car for codes, the check engine light must be off, and they read emissions level. -that's it.

if cars are 1995 or older here, there is no inspection at all and the cars are exempt from testing.

What Whiteclaw didn't say is that the vehicle doesn't have to pass the MOT if it's under 3 years old. Unless somethings changed since I was over there. The believe the car should be road worthy for at least that long. So basically, it's a free pass for 3 years although you still have to pay the Road Tax so the Government gets their money one way or another.

isnt that odd since that is most likely the years that need a saftey inspection

...and here if Florida, there's no inspection at all. I've seen some real junk on the roads. However, if the vehicle is stopped for another reason, a 'Fix It" citation can be issued by law enforcement which gives the driver 30 days to fix whatever was found and show that fix at any Police/Sheriff/State Trooper station. Unfortunately, that doesn't include brakes because you can't see how worn they are without taking the wheels off.

i agree. they changed it a couple years ago because they were putting pre-obd II cars on a type of dyno and it was costing the state too time much money. now they just do the cars they can scan easily.

it stinks when you're behind someones blue smoke emitting, oil burning jalopy, -but it's great for people who like adding performance parts to cars. pretty much every part i bought for/removed off my mustang would have made it fail.

I am not an authority on the MOT, but it was my understanding there is no 3 year thing. There is a thing for brand spanking new vehicles who require an MOT once every 2 years rather than every year, but it lasts for so long before it goes to every year.

It is strict though. Since the new checklist came in, my MOT took an hour.

The MOT is around $100

Car tax is around $400 a year.

And the insurance for me, that is currently just over $1000 a year.

All cars must have an MOT though. You cannot buy your car tax without a valid MOT certificate.
