Default Outer Tie rod end separation

04 GT turbo with 93K miles - The passenger side outer tie rod end literally fell apart - Thank the lord I was pulling into a parking space and going <5 MPH. I could have been killed!

I've never had a car where this has happended, however looking at the stock iie rod ends they are poorly made....So I guess I shouldnt be suprised. Out of a abundance of caution I will replace both other tie rods ends w/ Moog products.

I filed a complaint w the NHSTA to start the ball rolling if there is a pattern failure.

Has anyone else had this failure?

I haven't heard of this failure on a PT before...
Good choice on the MOOG parts and replacing all 4 tie rods at the same time.

They are not that hard do change yourself, you just need the inner tie rod tool, although some have said they were able to remove the inner with some channel lock pliers.

About as cheap as you get ...
(actually from Neon)

except, of course, Ford, who decided to use rubber in all their jointsthrough the 80's ...

You should probably replace the inner ones too. They may fail withing a few thousand miles and then you have to tear it apart again and pay for another wheel alignment.

For those of you who need a laugh ... pasted is a response from Chrysler customer service. I just got off the phone with the rep and is was very difficult for her to understand that this isnt about money... its about safety and she is lucky to be hearing from me instead of a product liablity attorney -- Thanks for your support!

Thank you for contacting the Chrysler Customer Assistance Center
regarding your 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser.

I regret the problem your vehicle has experienced and appreciate the
time and effort you took to bring this matter to my attention. Comments
like yours are one way we have to learn of problems that may develop and
improvements desired by customers.

Your concerns, particularly in view of the expense and inconvenience
involved in this issue, are understandable. The Basic Limited Warranty
Coverage for your vehicle was 3 years or 36,000 miles. The vehicle in
question has exceeded the time or mileage limitations of the
manufacturer's warranty.

I will contact you in one business day by telephone to review your
concern with you. I will attempt to contact you at the phone number
provided in your email at xxxxxxxx within one business day. If you
wish to be reached at an alternative number, please respond to this
email so that I may update your file appropriately.

We apologize for any inconvenience this delay may cause you, and
sincerely thank you for your patience.

LOL I Guess my 35 year relationship with Chrysler is over

Yep, my '98 Neon at 70,000 miles, had it happen to my son in a real bad part of town at 10PM... he got lost and made a u-turn and pop went the tie rod end. Called me and away I went with some thick wire and a 9mm. Wrapped the sucker together with wire to hold it in place and we were outta there.

Really?!? Your car is twice over the factory warranty. There ain't a lawyer in the world that would touch this complaint with a 10 foot pole. What were you expecting?
