rats! i changed the light bulbs in mine and had the neg terminal off the battery and there was enough residual charge when i plugged it in to pop the circuits in the cluster on the plus side my gas gauge doesnt work and i cant even figure by mileage cause the odometer is all 8s so i am forced to suck it up and drive the wifes cruiser for a while

I read on here that the speed o holds the mileage also.

are we sure it's the cluster that holds the mileage? My reason for asking is, iirc, when you get a new (to your car) PCM flashed, you have to supply the current mileage among other things.
Looking back i always wondered what if you fudged the mileage?

Someone said on here that he bought a replacement unit that had way more miles and it stayed there. Also someone had a stage 1 flashed and didn't have to give mileage. So thats what I based my answer from.

There must be some kind of reverse fail safe where the gauge cluster and the PCM have to agree or be close enough or else it would be too easy for a dealer or mechanic to "roll back" the mileage.

thats the reason i was wondering if the gauges hold the mileage a dealer or individal could easily roll back just by changing the gauges we got the mileage and the gauges working again by cleaning the contacts on the harness but no lights except emergency lights so im looking at a set of glowing gauges. been searching for installation videos to see how hard they are to install

Too much jail time and paper trail for a dealer to bother with rolling one back.

The only way to retrieve mileage if the odometer is out is to use a DRB and scan the engine controller. Chrysler warns, though, that the engine controller is not intended to provide "exact" mileage.

Therefore, the exact mileage is only stored in the cluster.
