Default Rear Hatch Does't Unlock

2005 PT with key fob for locks. The real hatch doesn't unlock with the key fob. If you use the key to unlock the rear hatch the doors do unlock. I took the back panel off but don't see anything obvious. I'm sure there is a relay, but can't figure out which piece it is. Ideas? Thank you

I believe the '05 is the new style hatch handle??? Read you owner's manual to see EXACTLY what is supposed to happen when you press the remote one time and then what happens when you press two times. Does the manual say the hatch will be unlocked but you still have to touch the pressure membrane pad to open the hatch? If the hatch doesn't unlock no matter how many times you press the remote, then, yes, someting is most likely wrong.

I'm not sure if I read this somewhere, but it may be possible to clear glitches from the central locking mechanism by disconnecting the battery, openning the door and stepping on the brake pedal to drain down any reserve power, then hooking the battery back up. It won't cost you anything to try but it is a minor pain because you will have to re-set your clock and radio stations. Don't get mad at me if it doesn't work, I'm just throwing that out as a possible fix.

I had the same issue but my car is a 2002. There is a servo that hooks up to the lock mechanism. On my car, it is a black box about 3x3" with a plug going into it. Fairly simple repair assuming the 2005 mechanism is similar to the 2002.

Certainly try the simple cheap method as outlined above but it sounds like the actuator (servo) has died.

We have had the car since new, and the problem just came up recently. The visible latch difference (larger chrome piece) was in the 2006 changes, but there probably were other changes. Is the servo the black box located center bottom where the latch connects with the body? I don't see anything on mine that matches your description. I need to get a Chilton's.

Battery idea didn't work. Oh well, I cleaned the terminal and it was pretty bad. Thank you for the suggestion. Looks like next step is a new actuator.
