Default Window Switches

Morning all.

I have been trying to find out if the window switch in the dash is supposed to be illuminated when the instrument lights are on.

So I went to the schematic and there does appear to be a circuit that is controlled by the instrument lights. Is there a way to replace the bulb without having to replace the entire switch?

On a related note, in my first PT in a Bucket thread several of us discussed when Chrysler added the 4 switch panel. It was supposed to be a 2002 model change, but several members with 01's posted that they have the 4 switch panel. I think we all agreed this was a late in the year change for some.

Here's the interesting part; the 2001 FSM shows only a schematic for the 4 switch panel. There is no schematic for the 2 switch panel. The front and rear switches are shown as separate systems, but all show the 4 switch panel in the dash.

Either way, does the switch light with the instruments?

Ron

Ron,

When the PT first hit the streets in early 2000 (May-June) those are the PT's that came with the 2 window switches. Chrysler quickly changed to the 4 window switches right after that (July-August). Don't bet any money on the exact months, I'm just guessing but mine came off the assembly line in September 2000 with the 4 switches. So, what I'm saying is there was only a couple months that had the 2 switches but since they were selling like hot cakes back then, there's quite a lot of them that have the 2, IF they are still around.

As far as illumination of the switches. ALL the switches ALL over the car had lights until around 2002-03 then that was one of the many things that Chrysler cut to save money over the years (I could name about 10 things they cut out). The lights are not replaceable as far as just taking them out and putting another in. They are soldered in place. However I have seen a thread a long time ago where someone added lights to the circuit of each switch to get them to light up, so I'm sure with a little work, any that do burn out can be replaced. Lastly, they do go bright and dim with the control on the MFS along with all the other lights.

Afternoon all. Thanks CREWZIN and Busted PT for the information. I was able to find the post where sanatanadharma replaced the bulbs in his switches. It's a 4 switch panel, but they should be similar.

I'll pull mine apart and let you know what I find.

Ron

Afternoon all.

I pulled both front and rear switch assemblies. The lighting is identicle in both. There is one tiny bulb mounted in a socket that is removed with a 1/4 turn. Easy enough to get out, but what do I replace it with? Per the parts catalog it is not servicable.

My first thought on this is to forget the socket. As the rear case has a hole the size of the bulb and socket, is there any reason I could not put a 12 volt LED in the hole and wire it behind the switch? The LED could be held in place with a grommet. Seems to be the simplest way to repair this. I like simple!

Any other ideas?

Ron

Do you have a Radio Shack around your area. Maybe they can match the buld up if you let them see it.
