I took my relays to O'Reilys and they told me they have no way to check to see if a relay is good or not. I was wondering if you can determine if a relay is good or bad by using a multimeter.? If it is possible can you guide me on how to check my relays to see if they are good or bad.

Hey Nitro PT, What do you mean by lead clamps? I have a regular multimeter with the two prongs. Can i still check the relays with this type of multimeter?

Alligator clips as your clamps. You will need the battery as source and ground and once setup you will hear the clicking sound that the relays makes and it will also give you an indication on your multimeter.

85 and 86 are the coil, 30 is common, 87a is normally closed (N.C.) and 87 is normally open (N.O.). With the relay coil de-energized, you will read continuity from 30 to 87a, while 30 to 87 will read open. Energize the coil with 12 volts (car battery) and you will hear a click as the contacts change state...30 to 87a now reads open and 30 to 87 now reads closed. As mentioned, some alligator clip test leads will be handy to make the required hook-ups.
