Default Result of the Pt Cruiser Audit

Hi Everyone,

I own a 2001 PT cruiser since a month (178k miles), everything is great from the inside, just the noise on the right.

I decided to bring it to the garage to make an general audit of the car...
The result are not good jus wanted to check with you what do you think about the report and what to do in priorities and the cost it may take (or maybe if it an be done as a DIY i will give a try or find a mechanics on craiglist).

Signaled Most Urgent:
- outer tie rods
- control arm bushings. (busted_PT you got it right)

Signaled less Urgent but still:
- Leaks Valve Cover, Axle Seals
- Timing Belt (cracked have to check it and take a pictures to see how bad is it..)

Signaled less important:
- noise (suspension)

Total estimated .. 4500 doll,

And the most urgent 1500-2000doll

What do you think about the range price?
and which job do you think need to be take care.

Thanks for your help!

IMO I wouldn't spend $4500 on a car that's worth less than $2000....BUT you can buy all the parts yourself for about $300 and pay a mechanic for about 8 - 10 hours of labor to get all that work done

eBay aftermarket parts will save you a bunch of money! And get another mechanic that is not a $4,500 job

I believe this member is in another country, so international rates would be off compared to what we see all day.

HI back,
thank for all your reply!

I am currently based in Saint Paul (Minnesota), and the price given was the garage near the university so for sure I was quite surprise by the price.
I will began to check on craiglist and find a mechanic that may do the job and check with the prices.

I am going to a road trip by the end of the week, hope the car will stay alive for the trip! (direction Mount Rushmore, if you have any tips about the area )

I will get back when I will have the quotes from the other mechanics!

Well don't I feel a little foolish. Sounded like a possible foreigner. Sorry for the assumption.

As for the repairs you listed, tierods and control arms should be done before you leave on your trip. Then you should have the timing belt and valve cover gasket taken care of, when you have the money.

Check out a few independent shops, they usually have the best rates, but $4500 is outrageous.

Good luck!

I think your mechanic is trying to rip you off. I get the impression, by reading on this forum, that there aren't that many honest car mechanics in the USA.

Well as far as Mt Rushmore goes I can tell you lots
I finally got around to filling my bucket list this year,
and took my gold wiing to Mt Rushmore ,Crazy Horse, Sturgis, Deadwood, and devils tower, and the bad lands

for me it was clost to 3000 miles in 6 days the weather was hot but awesome--some days were 106degrees

Mt Rushmore has the lighting cermony starting at like 7:00 pm and that is just awesome the mountain it self if but they way the do the cermony is breath taking way worth the hassle of getting there early

crazy hourse the indian is cool a lot more stuff to see and look at than Mt Ruxhmore but the indian is not as cool to me anyway they have a great resturant and its not bad priced

Sturgis is just a small towjn but on bike week its alive with a zillion harley riders however that is past

Wall drug was a cool place to stop shop and eat any thing and every thing you need is there

there is a Minute Man Missle silo and comand center that was really cool adn free

Devils tower loioks like its from another planet and it dosent belong where it is---- but it is

The Bad lands are like driving through the desert i kept waiting for Indiana Jones to pop up

therre is a place right off the highway called 1880 western town its way worth the cost of admission if you like opld west stuff they have a old train you can eat on

There are so many small museums along the way if you have time stop they make the tip memoriable

As far as your car that timing belt would worry me cause if it goes you are stuck where you are till its fixed and fixed in a emergency is never a good plann

the trip for me was almost life changing it was so cool to be on my bike on my own miles a dn miles from what i know as home

Good Luck

I totally disagree with you about the mechanics in the US. Yes, we have our share of shady garages, mechanics, shops, etc., that in no way represents the majority of the honest shops, garages, mechanics, etc that are operated in the US. You seldem hear about the honest hard working people doing whats right only about the one's that's dishonest.

Doesn't make any difference what area you talking about ie. mechanics, roofers, carpenters, remodelers , etc, etc, etc, you will find dishonest characters trying to rip people off.

IMHO anytime a person in spending a sizeable amount of money on any type of work or repair they should always get at least 3 opinion "estimates" if not more. As I am a very furgle person, I have found over the years it pays to shop around to get different opinion, before putting down my hard earn money. (which I have very little of )
