Default Checking Timing Belt

Hello Cruisers! First time poster here.

I'm going to be checking out a 2002 Cruiser Limited with 92k miles on it next week. I've read through the forums and have identified the recurring problems with this type of car. I'm not anticipating that a maintenance record will be available for this car. Because of that, I'm going to be relying on my own inspection.

I know that a big thing with these cars is the timing belt. And at 94k miles, it's either been changed, or will need to be changed soon. Is there any way to inspect the condition of the timing belt on such a walk around inspection? Has this question been asked before and I missed that thread?

Help me, O wise and wonderful internet! Many thanks!

Unless it's obvious the belt is in new condition or old. It's a crap shoot. maybe you will get lucky and find a sticker inside the cover.

^this

my gates timing belt kit came with a 3" x 4" bright yellow sticker that you write the date/mileage on and stick to the outside of the timing cover.

look in the antifreeze too. when i got mine there was sparkly glitter crap floating in the coolant from the previous owner trying to stop a waterpump leak.

if there's no sticker and they can't prove it was changed, i'd say it's safe to assume it's the original belt so talk them down on the price accordingly. that may be why they are selling it to begin with.

The belts have manufacturer printed on the belt if you can read this clearly it's been changed. This wears off but I don't know how long it takes. If they used non OEM belt. You will know for sure. No writing who knows how old.

Thanks for your help. Unfortunately, I found out why this Cruiser was selling so cheaply. The oil was sludge and it needs a new clutch, plus other nickle and dime problems. I could not determine if any service was done on the timing belt. Too many unknowns with this one. Looked good in the photos, but...oh well.

My search continues....

Never assume anything when it comes to the timing belt.I recently purchased an 03 turbo with 135,000. From one end to the other, it is perfect.Engine has no leaks of any kind. You can tell it has been babied.I thought for sure with that many miles and the way the car had been really taken care of, not abused, that the timing belt had for sure been changed.I drove the car for 2 days and decided to pop the top cover loose and check it.It was the stock belt and I can almost slide it off the camshaft pulleys by barely pushing it back and forth with one finger .. I'm surprised it didn't break on me or shred the teeth..Especially when I was gas'n on it ....Parts will be here tomorrow..

Nobody has said anything But if you get a Cruiser and have to change the Timing belt ,Figure on changing the Water Pump at the same time. If the one you were looking at had a sludge problem thats a good sign and the engine would or should be Flushed . The water pump is in the same spot and it is recomened to change it at the same time.

Very true about the water pump..I'm changing the belt, tensioner, idler water pump, crankshaft and camshaft seals..They are not leaking yet, but I don't want to have to do it again.I want to drive it!! I also found out that someone has put the green antifreeze in it.I don't know how long its been in there. It will also get a flush and the proper coolant..
