Default stuck in limp mode

My 2006 pt has gone into limp mode with a check engine light
I've checked the code on the dash and got p0340 which points to the camshaft position sensor, but I'm not so sure. Im hoping someone here can confirm that replacing the sensor is the next logical step, or point me in a better direction if its not.

I'm having doubt because the car still runs but other topics on this forum seem to indicate that if the sensor were really not working the car wouldn't run?
Also after checking the code on the dash a couple times in a row it ceased to show me any code, still having the check engine light and still starting into limp mode.

Also can you tell confirm that hard starting is a part of limp mode or is that a symptom of the real problem?

I just changed mine on 05 gt. when mine first went into limp mode, I took neg battery cable for five minutes to reset it and the vehicle returned to normal for awhile.

When problem returned, I ordered mopar oe online and changed myself.

Problem solved.

There's a good video on YouTube that shows how to do it. Takes about 30 minutes or less.

Let us know how it works out.

Well the code does not necessarily mean that the sensor is "dead" .

Its just a trouble code telling you that the sensor is not working correctly.

I would order a new one personally. But BUY IT FROM THE DEALER. Get a OEM part.

DO NOT. I repeat DO NOT. buy one from advance, autozone or pep boys or your car probably wont leave the parking lot.

PTs are very picky and usually only run on OEM sensors and vomit up aftermarket before they even taste them.

Rough starting and idling can both be symptoms of a bad sensor :-)

Thanks for the info guys, although I can't say I'm altogether relieved yet.

Also I can't say that the vehicle idles particularly rough, starting is hard in that I have to crank the engine 3 times as long as I normally do, but after 8-10 seconds of cranking it fires up consistantly and stays running just fine at least from idle speed til about 2200rpm where limp mode kicks in.
