Default 2006 Timing Belt

Hello. I am new here, and still looking at the wealth of info. you guys provide. I would like to get feedback.

My son was driving my 2006 PT Cruiser on the highway a few nights ago when the engine just suddenly died. He pulled off the road and put the flashers on. It would not crank when he tried it a minute later.

I had it towed to my driveway.

The tow driver tilted back the flatbed, got in the car, threw it in neutral, and coasted it down (backwards) to my driveway. Then he immediately told me the problem was the timing belt.

How could he possibly have come to that conclusion with such limited info.?

I have since looked at the car myself. The battery was weak (probably from the prolonged use of the flashers) so I jumped it. It cranks, but makes a whining noise and seems to be freewheeling, like it has no compression. Maybe the camshaft is not turning, and tow driver was correct?

My questions for the experts here:

How could the tow driver have come to the conclusion he did?
Is he correct, or is there another possibility?
What does it take to change a timing belt on this car?
Is there a tutorial available here that I haven't found?

Thank you all in advance for any assistance.

how many miles on the car? if it's cranking faster than it normally does, then chances are the tow truck driver is right. the timing belt should be replaced around the 100,000 mile mark. they have been known to go sooner.

how hard of a job is it? from what i hear, it's a 7 to 9 hour job. i took mine in, cost me roughly $1200. sounds like a lot of money, but you're good for another 100,000 miles. might as well get the water pump done and the tensioner as the belt has to come off to get to them. for an extra $10 they replaced the cam seals as well.

How many miles on your PT?

If your at 90K+ it is probably the belt.

You should read your owners manual and start looking at all the maintenance you may have deferred.

Yes we have a how to section in the tech and performance section at the top of the first page. I have a thread that helps with getting the harmonic balancer and lower sprocket off and on without a special tool. Just search harmonic balancerr removal tips. Also that info and pics are in the members project section under Busted PT project 1, around page 8 or 9.

Ouch. Mine has 124k. I should do it regardless. Thanks for your reply.
