Default Intermittent overheat

Hello all, looking for some advice from the experts. My daughters 02 overheated once while idleing in the driveway. Shut it off and it cooled down, haven't had a problem for the last couple of months. Yesterday it started to heat up when I was sitting on an off-ramp. Started to drive at city speeds and it continued to get hotter slowly. When it hit about 3/4 on the guage, I turned the A/C on knowing that would start the fan and the temperature went back down to normal. Turned the A/C off and temperature remained normal the rest of the day. I have read a lot of overheating threads here but really can't troubleshoot anything because everything is working normally now. So, what is the most likely culpret here? My initial thoughts are to change the fan, is that the best option? I'm sure my daughter will not be as attentive to the guages as I am when driving the car so I can't have it getting hot. Thanks.

Gus

Rock: Engine cold in am; check coolant at the 'radiator cap'. Level should be within 1 " of top. Plastic reservoir should be 1/3 full [check for a 'cold level' line].

Because you have an intermittent problem with overheating, more testing is req'd. I would do the 'fan test' first [if it is a non-turbo engine it has a 2 speed fan]. Both speeds must work!

If brushes are getting worn on the low speed. It could be intermittent at first. Sometimes making contact and sometimes not. If it's making contact when testing it would appear to be good. So I'm with you on the fan.

Thanks, I checked coolant level which is ok. Suppose I will order a new fan and give that a shot. I hate intermittent, I would prefer it if it was just broke. At least then I would know if it were fixed.

I always start cheap - tho your description does match fan symptoms, I would do thermostst and radiator cap as well.
