Default Valve chatter getting worse

2001 Non turbo Cruiser 105k miles. I noticed slight valve chatter when speeding up about 3 months ago not bad but i hate that dreaded sound. It has progressively gotten louder to the the point its very noticeable when driving. I maintain religious oil changes every 3k and do regular maintenance. I have searched for something to help remedy this situation but i keep getting into adjusting cam shaft lifters blah blah stuff i know nothing about. Is there anything i can do to help this or should i rush this to a mechanic to have him check it out?

DOHC, especially the PT, valvetrains are just about bulletproof.
very low oil pressure or contamination might do it-
I also find it hard to believe you could hear this engines chatter in the PT's cabin- It's well insulated.

Rod knock is mistaken for valvetrain noise in these engines.
It does sound like you may be referring to detonation, aka 'pinging'.

FYI, PT valvetrain isn't adjustable. There were about a dozen sets of adjustables made, I'd guess.

Only one of which was actually installed on a car ...

I have heard rod knock before this is NOT it. i can clearly hear it in the cabin with the windows up or down. if the AC is on i cant hear it but the chatter gets worse.

Maybe you can use one of these and pin point exactly were the noise is coming from. If it is in fact the valve train and you have ruled out oil pressure dropping from a failing oil pump, then, just replace the lifter(s).

Took it into a shop today and they said cylinder 1+2 are at 190% compression and 3+4 are at 110% compression. They said it needed a valve job and it will cost me about $1400.00.

This is the last time ill probably be on these forums because i need to buy another car now im bummed beyond belief.

170-225 is normal, but anything above 100psi with less than 25% difference between cylinders is OK. i'd just drive it

They shouldn't be making noise, though!
They should check the oil pressure- a valve job isn't going to fix that.

IF you can remove head (There's a how-to here) valves are very inexpensive.
AND, if it runs- Who cares it cylinders are 250 250 50 8????

Adjoining cylinders says head gasket to me. But I would drive it until you get a plan. A good time to find a buddy with skills to help you fix it down the road.
