Default Transmission

Hi people.
Iíve just bought my girlfriend a 2002 Auto PT-cruiser, 2l 87000 miles on the clock. Since driving it away Iíve/weíve noticed that at certain speeds when coasting staying the same speed there is a noise effect as if the car is undecided what dear to be in with a light thumping type noise (Pardon the vulgar description).
Mainly we were driving on the A66 and it seems to happen when we are cruising with traffic about 60mph. it does when you slightly put your foot down.
I am currently offshore in the North Sea but before I came away I checked the transmission oil and it seemed dark with a slight red tinge when wiped on white cloth. Could this need changing after just 87000?
Iíve since thought I could check for movement in the driveshaft on each wheel.
I think we also had the same problem/noise/feeling (ha) round town just once at about 30-40mph.
Has anyone had this happen or have any advice?
Plus any other things to watch out for (Common problems)
Regards
Marty Douglas

At this point, you may want to have the transmission professionally flushed and a new filter installed...couldn't hurt.

btw...at 87000 mi you are looking at a timing belt replacement.

Marty, welcome to the forum.

The fluid in the trans should be flushed at 48,000 miles (77,000 km) according to schedule B which is what most of us come under. Whoever changes it, make sure they use the recommended ATF+4 fluid. Your long overdue. As Carl48 pointed out, pretty soon it's time for the timing belt replacement. We recommend somewhere around 100K so you have a little while.

We've only had it a week.
There is a service assistance booklet which has stamps about its services on the back, but no info what's been done.
There is MOT information and a letter saying full service carried out, OBD health check, reset service, replacement 2 lambda sensors.

I'll get it flushed and changed, get the timing belt too.
About £30 for a timing belt kit is it not?

It's not exactly my car I bought it for her, it's her first car. Cherry Red. Very clean. Lovely piece of kit.

The timing belt kit is cheap...it's the labor involved to change the belt that costs a bunch if paid for at the dealers or a mechanic. About 5 to 7 hours (if you know what your doing). As I said, there's still some time to do that. Get the transaxle flushed. The fluid should be bright red or near enough. Not dark with a hint of red.

Well I've changed Timing belts before always manual (I know their's no real difference lol) Plus I'm mates with two cracking Mechy's.

Yeah I'll get it flushed and sorted as the oil definitely is not red lol.

What's the crack with the quick learn for after it's ben done. Will most garages do this or is there a way i can do it my self?

Cheers for all the help lads

Marty

Here's an older thread to read about the re-learning process.

Marty; the 'thumping noise' might be due to a CV joint going bad. A 'thumping noise' is not considered vulgar. However, a 'humping noise' might be.

I thought that but i can't find any play in any of the suspension etc. The noise is very uniform as apose to irratic. it's when we are moving at a steady pace not speeding up or slowing down and seems around 60-62mph.
